Lavender “Avignon Early Blue” is small and bushy with deep blue blooms and the strong fragrance of English lavender. Keep flowering plants in a warm, sheltered spot on the patio during winter and it will continue flowering into spring. Use the edible flowers in cooking or baking, and to flavour sugar. Cut off the dead blooms to encourage new flowers. In summer it can be planted out into the garden or into outdoor containers. It is perfectly suited to our Lowveld climate, being able to tolerate heat better than stoechas varieties.

Glenelly has released the 2013 vintages of its flagship Lady May Cabernet Sauvignon and its Estate Reserve signature red blend. The Lady May 2013 is a deeply-coloured, intense wine, with notes of cassis, blackberry, spicy plum and dark cherry, elegantly complex with a classic, bold structure. Distinct minerality and underlying fruitiness refine it, making this a fresh, subtle and stylish wine, with a long, layered finish. Available for around R520 at specialist wine merchants. The Estate Reserve signature red is a blend of 47% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, 15% Syrah, 11% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot and is the first vintage to have a Cabernet Franc component, which adds longevity and freshness. Elegance and power are the fundamentals here, with bold notes of cranberry, blackberries and blackcurrant chased by hints of spicy plum and the suggestion of cedar and florals.
