Friday night … open the wine

A collection of wines to enjoy this weekend (or stock up now for the festive season)

We’re thinking a bottle of Krone Vintage Borealis Cuvée Brut 2019 might be just the thing to celebrate the start of the festive season. This iridescent pale gold wine is 87 per cent Pinot Noir and 13 per cent  Chardonnay and is lovely on its own, but is also exceptional to serve with a bowl of mussels steamed open with seawater, or with a creamy porcini risotto. You’ll find it for around R165 at your local wine store or online at kronecapclassique.co.za

The colour is ruby, clear and bright. The taste is all blackcurrants and raspberries, with a hint of violets, and French oak. The wine is Journey’s End V2 Merlot 2016 … elegant, polished, and perfect for a festive special occasion. Around R180 from fine wine boutiques or shop.journeysend.co.za

Seasalter is Groote Post’s highly acclaimed flagship Sauvignon Blanc, and with good reason. There’s so much to love about this wine … which is a West Coast Story in a Bottle. The elegance and purity of fruit, vibrant acidity, oyster shell minerality and saline finish – so typical of Sauvignons from the unique maritime cool-climate Darling Hills terroir. Then there’s the charming name that captures the essence of the wine; and the refreshing distinctive label that visually portrays the West Coast soul of the wine. The multi-award winning Sauvignon Blanc, with 10 per cent Semillon and a touch of oak is all fragrant guava and gooseberry, blackcurrant and citrus notes on the nose, while you’ll taste  captivating yellow fruit and a zesty lime acidity with hints of fynbos, sea-breeze and a touch of oak. Rich layered and long, this subtly powerful blend an elegant well-balanced wine is an excellent food wine, best served with West Coast seafood of course. R159 a bottle.

The love affair with rosé wines keeps growing stronger. So this season we’re definitely going the rosé-all-day route. A fave … the Groote Post Brut Rosé. This classic blend of 70 per cent chardonnay and 30 per cent pinot noir is an elegant salmon-hued Cap Classique with a fine creamy mousse, gorgeous notes of crushed strawberries and raspberries, hints of biscuit and a silky smoothness on the palate. Just too, too delicious for words.

Available online at groote-post-wines.myshopify.com and at your local wine store for around R172.
