Friends, food and wellness – all in a pretty package

Imagine a place where nature, well-being and community intertwine, and you’ll picture Twinstreams Collective, perched on the edge of Mbombela in the Lowveld. Every visit here invites you to slow down, nourish your body, and reconnect with what matters most.

For owners Alan and Lesley Taylor, Twinstreams is the realisation of a heartfelt vision. “The property has always been known as Twinstreams by our family,” Alan explains. “It has evolved to become a destination for locals and tourists alike, a place where every visit is inspiring and memorable.”

When Alan and Lesley opened Friends Café six years ago, neither came from the food or lifestyle industry, Alan is the visionary entrepreneur, while Lesley brings a practical, people-centred approach as an occupational therapist. Together they’ve built a destination defined by authenticity, balance and a love for the Lowveld. “We wanted to create a unique dining experience that celebrates living in the Lowveld, not overlooking a carpark,” says Alan. “Our approach is honest and unpretentious, with attention to detail on every plate.”

What began as a family-run café has grown organically into the Twinstreams Collective, a vibrant lifestyle hub now home to a restaurant, wellness practitioners, and fitness spaces, a place where every visit feels like a mini-retreat.

Friends Café

At the heart of it all is Friends Café, the social soul of Twinstreams. This family-owned restaurant champions authentic, locally sourced ingredients, prepared by seasoned chefs and bakers. Signature dishes include slow-braised lamb shank, butterflied prawns, hearty breakfasts, and what regulars call “the best LaVazza cappuccino in town.”

From corporate catch-ups to romantic dinners, birders’ breakfasts to post-run smoothies, Friends Café brings people together in a setting of dappled shade and riverside calm. Pets are welcome, kids can roam freely, and the friendly staff make everyone feel like part of the family.

Open Tuesdays through Sundays from 08:00 until late (closed on Christmas Day), it’s also a go-to for special events such as baby showers, and corporate functions, all surrounded by art, African artefacts and the warmth of family creativity.

Core360 & Play360

After (or before) a long lunch, there’s movement to be found just steps away at Core360, the fitness engine of Twinstreams. Here, individual or small-group coaching focuses on real, sustainable progress. The integration of physiotherapy and biokinetics into functional training sets it apart, offering both performance and recovery support under one roof.

For something more playful, Play360 brings padel to the Lowveld. Its lively courts host community tournaments, kids’ lessons and family games, all in a friendly Americano format where partners rotate each match. The adjoining play area, clubhouse and café make it an ideal hang-out for families and friends alike.

Wellness360

While Friends Café feeds the body and Core360 strengthens it, Wellness360 completes the picture, uniting holistic practitioners across mind, movement and medicine.

  • Body Beautiful, established in 1987 by Stephanie Booysen, offers facials, massages, manicures, pedicures, microneedling, waxing, lash extensions and more in a tranquil riverside setting.
  • Dr Rav James, one of only two South African doctors accredited by the North American Menopause Society, brings functional and metabolic medicine to women’s health, focusing on longevity and vitality.
  • Dr Soretha du Plessis, a homeopath with more than 20 years’ experience, offers herbal and energy therapies designed to restore balance through nature-aligned methods.
  • Physiotherapists Aïda Grobler and Genevé Swart cover everything from fascial manipulation and dry needling to sports injury rehab and mobility restoration.
  • Pilates instructor Jess Coertzen guides classes that promote strength, balance and control, open to all levels, from beginners to older adults.
  • Psychologist Hermien Schröder brings an integrative, trauma-informed approach to emotional healing, blending modalities such as BrainSpotting and Deep Brain Reorienting.

A Collective Vision

With no entrance fee, free parking, and meandering trails that lead through bushveld to a granite dome with sweeping views, Twinstreams is as much a sanctuary as a lifestyle space. Whether you come for a cappuccino or ice-cold cocktail, a delicious meal or a padel match, a therapy session or a walk with your dog, the Twinstreams Collective offers something for everyone, a rare harmony of nature, movement and community in the heart of the Lowveld.
