When Janine Taljaard first imagined Rapha Wellness and Health Studio, she wasn’t just starting a business.
She was also answering a personal calling. “It began with two things,” she explains. “The need to have my own business and be my own boss, and also the need to do something special.”
That sense of purpose came from Janine’s own health journey. “I went into early menopause and suffered from all the normal mood changes, and aches and pains associated with it,” she says. “I was searching online for ways to alleviate these symptoms, and found red light therapy.”
At the time, no one in or around Mbombela offered full-body red light therapy. “That was the defining moment for me,” Janine recalls. “I discovered there was no full-body red light therapy available, and the rest was history. It took us probably a year of planning and setting up the business, but I was determined and knew I could make a success of it.”
The name Rapha carries deep meaning. “Rapha means healing in Hebrew,” she says. “I thought it very important to base my business on my Christianity. The name is very special to me.”
What started as a simple goal, to bring red light therapy to Mbombela, has grown far beyond its beginnings. “My vision was simple, but who knew it would evolve this quickly?” she says. “I added the CryoPen recently to freeze off skin lesions. I also added three products to Rapha Wellness: a moisturising body cream, turmeric body scrub, and an anti-aging face oil. I’m loving exploring new ideas and growing my business, with wellness being the centre of it all.”

Janine’s philosophy is rooted in effort and care. “I’ve always had this motto in life: if you want to do something, do it to the best of your ability,” she says. “I want to create a place of beauty and calmness, where you can be yourself and recharge, mentally and physically.”
In a world where ‘wellness’ has become something of a trend, Janine keeps her approach simple and human. “I think it’s important to get to know your clients and their needs,” she says. “At Rapha, people come in as clients and leave as friends. We might not always realise it, but sometimes we need a willing ear more than a treatment, and with that in mind, I want to sell an overall positive experience.”
For Janine, healing isn’t just about therapy; it’s about compassion. “Healing comes in many forms,” she explains. “Sometimes we need a chat more than therapy. And sometimes, you don’t want to talk at all, you just need a good treatment. I think above all, to be kind and not to judge is very important to me, and I hope that Rapha Wellness embodies that.”
She hopes every client feels that warmth the moment they walk in. “I want my clients to feel calm and relaxed when they come to Rapha Wellness,” she says. “I want them to want to come back, and never leave,” she smiles.
In today’s stressful world, Janine believes that work like hers matters more than ever. “We live very stressful lives, and we have to learn to put ourselves first, and spend not just money, but time on our well-being,” she says. “We need a good balance in our lives to be able to handle the situations life throws at us.”
At Rapha Wellness and Health Studio, treatments are always tailored. “You can get tailor-made combo packages to suit your needs and budget,” she says. “These include full-body red light therapy and G5 massage treatments. You can also get rid of unwanted benign skin lesions with the CryoPen O+. Rapha Wellness is also very excited to add another red light therapy device to the collection, a MedWave treatment that will focus mainly on weight loss.”

Every treatment begins with understanding. “At Rapha Wellness, we tailor our treatments to our clients’ needs,” she explains. “Honesty and transparency are vital when trying to treat and heal certain conditions. It’s important to know what your client wants to get out of their treatment. Whether it’s hormonal symptoms, muscle pain, or anti-aging, we treat the symptoms directly.”
And the results speak for themselves. “I’ve had the most amazing feedback from my clients,” Janine says. “From how much better they’re sleeping to how much better they’re feeling emotionally. Clients’ circulation has improved drastically, as has their mobility due to reduced swelling and pain. I’ve even had a client literally say she can’t live without red light therapy. She was one of my first clients and continues with her therapy every week.”
Janine’s motivation remains simple: to make a difference. “My hope for Rapha’s future is to help as many people as I can, and to make a difference in people’s lives,” she says. “I’ve made my treatments affordable with the hope of bringing red light therapy to everyone, not just people who can afford expensive treatments.” Janine smiles warmly as she says that if Rapha could speak, its message would be gentle but wise: “Small steps today prevent big regrets tomorrow.”
