In September 2025, Nyoni proudly celebrated a major milestone: its official registration as an independent school with the Mpumalanga Department of Education.
The ribbon-cutting, led by Deputy Chief Education Specialist Thoko Mphe alongside Founder and Executive Director Renata Stewart, marked not just an achievement but the recognition of a dream built through perseverance, faith, and community support. “We’ve walked a long road to get here,” Renata shared on the day. “But every step mattered. Nyoni has become a place where tomorrow’s adults are nurtured with compassion, creativity, and courage, because the future will need far more than good marks.”
Principal Hannelien Somers echoed this vision as she blessed the opening: “May Nyoni be a place where every child finds belonging, where curiosity flourishes, and where love for our Creator and our planet becomes part of their heritage.” And indeed, belonging is what sets Nyoni apart.
A new kind of learning for a new world
At Nyoni Education Hub, learning looks and feels different. Small classes of no more than ten allow teachers to truly know each child, creating a warm, personal start to each day as students arrive in civvies, greeted by name. Lessons follow the CAPS curriculum but unfold flexibly, with teachers moving between whole-class teaching, small-group guidance, and hands-on, project-based learning.
Without the rigidity of bells or strict routines, the school day flows calmly and purposefully, blending computer work, writing, collaboration, and practical exploration. Breaktimes are full of joyful, imaginative play as children of all ages mix freely, climbing, swimming, building and laughing in a space where respect, kindness, and inclusivity are lived values.
A school that cares for the earth
Environmental awareness is woven into daily life at Nyoni. Surrounded by natural beauty, students are encouraged to observe, explore, and engage with the world around them, nurturing a lifelong appreciation for the environment.
Through recycling routines, water-wise habits, gardening, nature walks, and learning about local ecosystems, children grow to understand their role as caretakers of the planet. Nyoni’s aim is to raise young people who not only understand the challenges facing our environment, but who are motivated to protect and cherish it.
Two pathways, one vision
Nyoni offers two unique educational pathways:
• Grades 4-9 small classes
A full school day (8 am to 2 pm) blending academics, creativity, environmental learning, skills development, and emotional well-being in a nurturing, low-pressure environment.
• Grades 10-12 tutor centre
Senior students follow their chosen online curriculum with the support of a facilitator who helps them manage time, meet deadlines, prepare for exams and stay motivated. This pathway empowers independent learning while ensuring no student feels lost or alone.
