It’s officially been five years since Ballito’s flagship Ocean Basket first opened its doors in the once derelict Big Blue Building in the Ballito Village. We’re raising a glass this month to toast this local, family-owned success story.
You’d be excused for thinking you’d walked into some dreamy Mediterranean bolt hole on your first visit to Ocean Basket Ballito, overlooking Salmon Bay. With over 300 Ocean Basket stores worldwide, including idyllic Cyprus and Malta, it’s truly saying something to rate Ballito’s very own Ocean Basket restaurant as one of the most picturesque in the world.
The double-storey restaurant on Compensation Beach Road, owned and operated from the start by local couple Jason and Mel Powell, has been a seafood haven for local regulars and holidaymakers. You’re always guaranteed a warm welcome, world class ocean views, and delicious Mediterranean style seafood and sushi. Not to mention you can still bring the whole family for a hearty meal without breaking the bank.
The team still comprises mostly of original staff members who joined Jason and Mel way back in 2017. Skilfully led by general manager Perfect Mhlongo and Beauty Kwela, the friendly faces at OB will most likely greet you by name after your first few visits!
The focus is on family here, offering a safe and tranquil space to spend relaxed, quality time together over a game of Uno or a fun ocean-themed word search (just ask your waiter for the ‘fun box’ of games and activities).
The menu is a hit with pensioners too, who find every day value in each seasonal offering. This summer, the group has delivered something special with a new-look menu, and fresh Mediterranean flavours. Choose from edamame fritters and vibrant bowls of sushi rice or quinoa with tasty toppings, or fish on the bone (like the herby lemon sole) and new signature sushi (try the almond and prawn rolls!). Ocean Basket offers even more value with their generous sharing platters, and of course the homemade rolls and trio of sauces that come free with every meal.
