Paintball and programming princess

Brave, blonde and oh-so beautiful … the recently crowned Miss Ballito, Melissa Landman is everything you would imagine her to be, and so much more.

1. What inspired you to enter the Miss Ballito competition?
I wanted to meet more like-minded women and have access to a platform that allowed me to get involved in community service. I teach modelling, so I am used to being behind the scenes rather than in the spotlight. This was a great opportunity to build my confidence on stage, and to show my students the importance of being brave and confident in yourself.

2. Looking back, what was your highlight during the competition?
Learning how to dance to Havana by Camila Cabello. I thought I would fall all over my feet, but it pushed my boundaries and taught me to have fun while learning.

3. What goal would you like to achieve as the new Miss Ballito?
I am excited to continue The Resilience Project which I started during the competition. The aim is to encourage high school students to do community service and urge them to continuously help those in need. It will help improve their mental health, while giving them the opportunity to meet other young students in a safe environment.

4. What is the one thing most people would be surprised to learn about you?
While I love being a ‘girly’ girl, I am also a tomboy at times as I grew up with two very adventurous brothers. I enjoy paintball and getting dirty outdoors. I also enjoy programming in my spare time.

5. Why do you love life in Ballito?
Ballito brings me peace and I am fortunate to live life at a pace that suits me, while still pushing me to thrive. It feels like I am on an island filled with many unique businesses, people and secrets to discover.

6. Dogs or cats?
I am definitely a dog person! I have a Peekapom – a marshmallow-like fluff ball – called Chai and a Dachshund named Milo. They have personalities of note!

7. Time to spill the tea on your styling secrets:
• Go-to outfit: Definitely a pair of edgy, black boots coupled with black skinny jeans, a tank top, a black blazer and lots of gold jewellery.
• Ultimate evening look: I absolutely love dressing up for an evening event and my outfit usually includes a tight-fitting dress, some sparkling heels and an updo hairstyle with statement earrings.
• Can’t-live-without make-up products: I will not leave the house without some mascara and highlighter on. I am all for the glowing look during the day and making sure my eyes pop.
