A splash of vibrance

Tasked with updating this beautiful Simbithi home while maintaining its authenticity, interior decorator Megan Cardwell added a splash of vibrance, colour and character to each space.

Bold wallpaper, key pieces and the clever use of reupholstering were all it took to transform this home into a contemporary, unique sanctuary where spaces flow seamlessly into one another.
“We wanted to give the home an update without removing the antique furniture and special items that were already there,” says Ardent Interiors owner Megan. “Our brief was to create unique spaces that tell a story, while still keeping it comfortable, homey and a place where memories can be created.”

BOLD CHANGES
While Megan and her team were given a lot of free reign, they also enjoyed the input they received from their clients during their brainstorming and working sessions. “This ensured that they were happy with the boundaries we wanted to push. The black bedroom was touch-and-go,” she laughs, “but it worked out in the end and has become one of our favourite rooms to date!”

Another bold move, Megan says, was in the cove area, which lies between the living and dining rooms. “Now covered in beautiful, airloom-flowered wallpaper, we had some wonderful working sessions around this space, which ended up coming together so beautifully. It was also nice to bring some colour into the living area where greys, white and wood were dominant. Taking a risk with the pops of moody colour paid off and we were both very happy with the end result.”

Reupholstering was a big focus in this project and each room was also given a little ‘splurge’ like the addition of a playful pouffe, modern lighting or greenery.

A FRESH LOOK
Reupholstering, which was a big focus with this project, is a great way to update and freshen up loved pieces, while also keeping costs down. “The entire patio lounge was reupholstered, which saved on unnecessarily purchasing expensive outdoor furniture. We also kept a lot of the sentimental antiques, updating and refreshing them with beautiful fabrics, chalk paint and new scatter covers.”
Megan says there was generally one key item in each room that was a ‘splurge’, like a playful pouffe, headboard with character, modern lighting, and some greenery to bring spaces to life.

We just adore this bold, playful and happy guest bedroom.

“We also always include décor items. Clients often ask if they are necessary, but I feel they are so important to give a room that final, finishing touch. Small décor items create sentiment (not to be mistaken with clutter).”

UNIQUE AND MEMORABLE
Reflecting on the overall experience and final outcome of this project, Megan says she loved the challenge and being given the freedom to push boundaries. She also says she is very lucky to work with incredible suppliers, such as Hertex Fabrics.
“Our Hertex agent gives us weekly updates on everything new coming in, ensuring our clients are privvy to the latest and greatest on the market. Their imports, while slightly more expensive, are also amazing and it is lovely to know that we can keep up to date with international trends.”

This bold, black bedroom is unique, dramatic and exciting!

Having created a unique and memorable home that flows seamlessly, Megan says she is very proud of what they have achieved. “I could not imagine any other home looking even slightly similar to the spaces that we have brought to life here. Each room is unique, while still carrying the overall look and feel of the entire home. It still holds memories and sentimental value, while offering a sense of calm and comfort that every home should bring. I am very grateful to this client for allowing me to just ‘go with it’ and for trusting the process.”
