Let them eat (fabulous) cake

Traditionally meant to bring good luck to all the guests, as well as the bridal couple, wedding cakes have evolved over the years to become magnificent centrepieces and exquisite, unique desserts served either before or at the end of the wedding reception. Smith’s Bakeshop owner Taryn Smith shares this year’s top wedding cake trends …

  1. Semi-naked wedding cakes are still our number one, most-requested style. Semi-naked means there is still a light layer of icing on the cake, but it’s been scraped down so you can see the layers of cake peeking through. It’s the perfect blank canvas for any style, from rustic to modern and boho to classic.
  2. Pressed flowers. We love the pressed flower trend . . . it’s our favourite look! Edible flowers are used to add pops of colour and fun to your cake and they are perfectly safe to eat.
  3. Dramatic flowers. Goodbye boring, old cake table … dramatic flowers (either on the cake or on the cake display table) will make sure your cake takes centre stage.
  4. Big weddings are back with a bang and, while huge statement wedding cakes are back to feed all your guests and bring the ‘wow factor’, there are still many couples eloping, or just having their closest friends and family present. Mini tiered cakes are perfect for these intimate celebrations.
  5. Colour and texture. A lot more couples are going for colour or texture (or both) to add interest to their cakes. We include texture with a simple stripe in the buttercream, smudges and layers, hand-painted flowers or (a bit more dramatic) the addition of rice paper shards. Couples are also embracing colour and I love it! Rich hues and metallics are making an appearance and it’s a lovely way to bring in your colour scheme in a different way.

According to Taryn, a few other trends to keep an eye out for are: lambeth cakes (the old-fashioned piping that gives the perfect vintage look for your big day); interesting cake stands, props and separators (particularly clear acrylic boxes with flowers used to separate the tiers); the inclusion of pets (sweet little sugar paste versions of couples’ fur babies are making an appearance on cakes and it’s a lovely way to include your pets in your day if they are not allowed at the venue.
