COASTAL LIVING

This beautiful home in Zululami Luxury Coastal Estate is all about texture and comfort. Interior designer Samantha Clayton lets us in on her process of creating a relaxed and stylish space.

Nestled in one of the North Coast’s most sought-after estates, this home blends in beautifully with the natural environment. So, when it came to designing the interior, Samantha wanted to draw on the outdoor scenery and bring something of nature inside. To do so, she used shades of blue and green throughout the space, and incorporated materials like wood and stone. “Working with natural textures and tones and allowing the colour to flow from the outside in enabled me to create a cohesive atmosphere,” she explains.
When coming up with the overall design and concept for this home, Samantha says that she wanted it to have a broad appeal. As a new build, no one had lived in the space before so she had the chance to work with a blank canvas, an exciting prospect for any designer. “The options were endless in terms of layout and functionality and there were no boundaries or requirements,” she says.

Samantha chose to accentuate the space by using big furniture items, including an L-shaped sofa in the living room and a live edge table in the outdoor entertainment area, both of which were custom-made and oversized. “This really shows off the space the home has to offer, as well as the size of this home,” she says.

One of the design elements that Samantha made sure to consider was texture – something she says is often overlooked. “Live edge solid wood pieces give the home a sense of natural living and really adds to the coastal living style,” she explains. “I used a grass cloth wallpaper to showcase the high ceilings and to add a sense of warmth to the space.”
The main objective of Samantha’s design was to create a space that felt accessible and easy to live in. “My goal was to create a home that feels like a space you could see yourself living in,” she says.
