A luxury escape…

There’s something truly magical about the Drakensberg Mountains – and a visit to Cayley Mountain Resort was good for the soul.

Nestled in the picturesque Central Berg, Cayley Mountain Resort boasts dramatic views over the Cathkin Peak and Sterkhorn ranges. When we arrived, in late spring last year, the mountains were capped with snow and the air was crisp. Fortunately, the resort is perfectly equipped for all seasons, and we were treated to lunch of fresh oven-baked ciabatta sandwiches next to a cosy fire as we settled into the relaxed pace and natural beauty of our surroundings.

A tour of the resort’s accommodation and facilities revealed beautifully appointed luxury villas and suites with modern finishes, as well as plenty of activities for the whole family – think games room, a day spa and kids’ play areas. The stand-out feature, however, is a heated infinity pool known aptly as ‘The View’. The pool and café area are perfectly positioned at the edge of the resort and look over the striking Champagne Castle range, which was covered, at the time, in soft cloud.

After dinner and a restful night’s sleep, we woke to see the mist had lifted and the sun was up over the mountains. After a leisurely cooked breakfast at The Bell & Whistle restaurant, it was off to Body Bliss, the on-site spa for a thoroughly relaxing treatment. We were treated to a massage, but it’s possible to choose from a wide range of other treatments, including hydrotherapy, body polish and facials. Feeling rejuvenated, we took a stroll to Cayley Beach Club, located at Bell Park Dam and proudly dubbed the only Beach in the Berg. Here, you’ll find a deck, a pretty pebble beach with day beds, braai and picnic areas, an inflatable waterpark and plenty of water activities to keep busy.

As we were lucky enough to have perfect weather conditions, we enjoyed a scenic boat cruise on the dam. Our knowledgeable guide shared information about the area and its wildlife, which includes mountain reedbuck, oribi, jackal and baboons, as well as an impressive range of birds. And then, for some extra-fun, we were given the chance to go quad-biking up the side of the mountain. The guided quad biking tours are run by Leap Adventures, and their team is also able to arrange several other adventures, including archery, paintball and fishing rod hire.

Dinner, served in the on-site restaurant, was a wholesome feast after a packed day of exploring. The menu boasts a wide range of options such as locally caught trout stuffed with vegetables and coated in garlic butter; tasty pasta dishes; fresh salads; and indulgent desserts.

Besides its stunning setting, the thing that really sets Cayley Mountain Resort apart is its modern comforts and luxury feel. Each space has been carefully thought through and designed for leisure. It’s a haven for nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers, but equally good for those simply looking to relax in privacy.

For those interested in investing in their own spot, there are a few ownership options: sectional title luxury villas and suites for investors looking to earn real rental income and enjoy up to 14 weeks of private use; fractional ownership for those looking to take advantage of up to four weeks’ access to a luxurious farm house or villa; and classic timeshare options with one week of fixed vacation time per year. All units come fully furnished and equipped, while rentals, cleaning and admin work are all taken care of.
