The art of storytelling

Husband-and-wife team Tash and Rich Lange love capturing special moments through photography and film.

Romantic, warm and dreamy…Tash and Rich are passionate about creating images and videos that evoke a sweet sense of nostalgia. While Tash focuses on photography, Rich captures the real, raw moments in between with videography.

Based in Ballito, they have worked together for a number of years offering brand development and photography for local businesses, but it is family and wedding shoots that remain at the heart of their business, Stories by Goya. Working together has its challenges. “There was a lot of butting heads in the beginning,” laughs Rich, but the couple has found a way to make it work, and each of them brings their own style and strengths to a shoot. Tash is a people-person with an eye for detail, and Rich is a creative spirit who likes to be behind the scenes where he can capture special, fleeting moments. “Storytelling is at the heart of all our work,” explains Tash. “To be able to preserve the art of storytelling in some way is why we love what we do.”

When Tash and Rich shoot a wedding, they encourage the couple to keep it real. “We’re there the whole day. Let’s not fabricate it,” says Tash. “It’s not about the photography and the video, it’s about your wedding and we’re there to capture what’s actually happening. You’re marrying the person you love most in the world, surrounded by the rest of the people that you love most in the world. What’s not going to be beautiful about that?”

When it comes to their visual style, Tash and Rich have remained traditional in an effort to create work that won’t date over time. “In 20 or 40 years’ time, you’re not going to remember a trend that was happening on Instagram,” says Rich. That said, their particular aesthetic has a desaturated, film-like quality with a soft, dreamy feel.

Through their work, Tash and Rich have connected with some wonderful people, and there’s often a natural progression where they do maternity and family shoots for their wedding couples. “We just love being able to tell a real story about people, and to capture moments, because it all goes so fast,” says Tash.
