If you’re after great food, fantastic views and cocktails that transport you straight into holiday mode, Rockets Beach Club in Umhlanga is the place to be!
Overlooking the Umhlanga promenade, Rockets boasts beautiful ocean views, modern design and a vibe that is laid-back yet stylish. While it’s well-known for its weekend party scene, this trendy space shouldn’t be overlooked when it comes to food. We visited for a leisurely lunch and were treated to some fabulous flavours.
COCKTAILS AND GOOD VIBES
We kicked things off with a couple of cocktails that really set the mood. The blueberry mojito was everything you’d expect – refreshing, a bit tangy, with just the right amount of sweetness. On the other hand, the strawberry and mango passion daiquiri was a tropical dream. It’s exactly the kind of drink you’d want in hand while soaking in the beach views.
STARTING IN STYLE
For starters, we went with the Tempura Prawn Ritz, and wow, what a way to begin. Think smoky cream cheese wrapped in avocado, crispy tempura prawns and a sprinkling of blueberry pearls and pistachios. It was a beautiful balance of creamy and crunchy, with just a hint of sweetness that worked perfectly.
MAINS THAT DELIVER
And then came the sushi. The New Phoenix Roll was a showstopper – filled with salmon and cream cheese, topped with mustard mayo, cherry tomatoes, and a sprinkle of caviar. But the best part? The sauce was lit and poured at the table by our lovely waitron Gailee, adding a bit of drama to the meal. The Crisp Mist Roll was another hit – a crispy fried California roll with prawn, cream cheese and a spicy kick from pickled jalapeño. With a drizzle of teriyaki and kewpie mayo, the rolls were packed with flavour.
The star of the show, however, was definitely the pepper-crusted tuna. Seared to perfection and served with caramelised butter and fresh thyme, and flamed with cognac, it was rich, but not overpowering, and the potato foam and roasted veggies were spot on. Comfort food, but elevated.
A SWEET FINALE
For dessert, we couldn’t resist the caramel panna cotta. It was silky, smooth and paired with a cherry glaze and chocolate flakes that made it feel super indulgent. If you’re more of an ice cream fan, the vanilla ice cream with homemade caramel and Belgium chocolate is the way to go – simple, but oh-so-satisfying.
