All about the BLOOMS

There’s a certain magic in starting your day surrounded by vibrant blooms. We visited The Flower Farm in Ballito where flower picking isn’t just an activity – it’s also an opportunity to immerse yourself in nature’s beauty.

The Flower Farm is the brainchild of Sam Sparrow and her partner, Dale Grobler. They stepped into the world of floriculture in 2021, an idea born out of necessity during the covid pandemic. Dale, previously a successful organic farmer supplying high-end restaurants, faced significant challenges as the lockdowns impacted the hospitality industry. Meanwhile, Sam brought her background in advertising to the table. Together, they ventured into the flower business, which quickly exceeded their expectations, selling out every season.
Recently, the couple made the bold decision to relocate their thriving enterprise from Hillcrest to Ballito, where the location, weather and audience in Ballito are perfectly suited to growing and selling flowers.

A HANDS-ON FLORAL EXPERIENCE
On our visit, The Flower Farm was a kaleidoscope of colours. Zinnias in shades of pink, red and yellow stood proudly, delicate flamingo wings swayed gently in the breeze, and striking cockscomb beckoned to be picked. Armed with scissors and a bucket, we wandered through rows of blooms, selecting our favourites.
After we had carefully filled our buckets, Sam led us to a shaded spot for a bouquet-making workshop. With contagious enthusiasm, she shared tips on pairing colours, layering textures and creating arrangements that felt effortlessly elegant.

COMMITTED TO SUSTAINABILITY
The Flower Farm is more than a place to gather flowers; it is a hub of sustainability and connection. Committed to eco-friendly and organic farming practices, the farm ensures that each bloom is cultivated with care for the environment.
Currently, the farm boasts 3 500 varieties, from zinnias and sunflowers to amaranthus and cosmos. The selection changes with the seasons, offering a fresh experience with each visit. Looking ahead, Sam and Dale plan to launch a wholesale division to supply fresh, locally-grown flowers to florists, event planners and the public.
