Making magic

Dani Upneck, founder of Wild Berry Creative, hosts flower crown-making workshops – whether you’re organising a bridal shower, teambuilding event or a relaxed day with the girls, everyone’s welcome! We got together to try a workshop for ourselves.

After overcoming health struggles, Dani recently left the corporate world to follow her passion, and her love for her craft is contagious. “I wanted to do something that brought happiness, not just to others but to myself as well,” she explains. For her, making flower crowns felt like the perfect way to celebrate the healing power of creativity.
Around a table set with leaves, blooms and all the necessary materials, Dani guided us through the process of creating our own flower crowns. We left the workshop not only with stunning flower crowns but also with hearts full of inspiration. Dani’s journey from a challenging health struggle to building her own business was a reminder of how important it is to make time for creative pursuits.
Top tip: The pale green of Penny Gum makes other colours pop beautifully.

YOU WILL NEED:

• Floral wire
• Floral tape
• Greenery
• Ribbon
• Fresh flowers (we used chrysanthemums, chamelaucium (waxflowers) and ericas)
• Scissors

STEP 1: MEASURE AND CUT YOUR BASE
Wrap floral wire around your head to measure the size of your crown. Leave a little extra length, then cut the wire and twist the ends together to form a circle. You can double the wire for added sturdiness.

STEP 2: PREPARE YOUR FLOWERS AND GREENERY
Cut your sprigs of greenery (about the length of your index finger). You’ll need around 30 to 40 pieces. Choose your flowers and trim their stems.

STEP 3: ATTACH THE GREENERY & FLOWERS
Start by wrapping pieces of greenery around the floral wire, securing them with floral tape. This creates a lush base for your crown. Make sure the greenery extends around the entire length of the wire. Add your flowers in the pattern of your choice.

STEP 4: FINISH WITH RIBBON
For a bit of extra flair, tie a ribbon at the back of the crown where the wire ends meet. This also helps cover any exposed wire or tape.

STEP 5: ADJUST AND WEAR!
Once all your flowers are secured, try on your flower crown and adjust the blooms as needed. You’re now ready to wear your beautiful creation!
