We chatted to a Ballito lifeguard who’s keeping our beach safe and inspiring others with his passion and perseverance.
If you’ve spent any time at Willard Beach, chances are you’ve seen Ernest Phungula – cheerful, calm and always keeping a close eye on the ocean. As one of Ballito’s lifeguards, Ernest is a familiar face on the sand – and this month, when the Ballito Pro and school holidays roll round and the beaches are buzzing, he’ll be right there at the centre of it all.
In love with the ocean
Originally from Thembeni, Ernest has lived in the area all his life and has been working at Willard Beach since 2014, first as a seasonal lifeguard before becoming permanent a few years later. His love for the ocean started when he was young, although his parents weren’t exactly thrilled about his adventurous streak. “They’d always ask why I went near the sea because it was dangerous,” he laughs. “But I just love it – I’ve always felt happy around the ocean.”
From school to surf rescue
Ernest first got into lifeguarding in Grade 11 after seeing his neighbours do it. “My favourite part is meeting people from all over. Every day is different, and I love that.”
Ironman on the side
As if spending long days in the sun and sea wasn’t enough physical activity, Ernest is also an Ironman athlete – and he’s just completed his second Ironman event. “It’s not easy,” he admits, “but I love it. It keeps me fit for lifeguarding, and I really enjoy pushing myself.” His days are packed with training – running, swimming, and cycling according to a strict schedule set by his coach, Glenn.
A passion born from perseverance
He first got into the sport after a casual training session invite. He borrowed a bike and gave it a go – and never looked back. “Now I can’t imagine stopping – I’ve definitely found my passion!”
Off duty? Still at the beach
When he’s not on duty or training, Ernest’s still where he’s happiest – by the sea. “Even on my off days, I come to the ocean. My friends always ask why I’m not resting at home – but this is where I want to be.”
What’s in Ernest’s beach bag?
Ernest shares his beach must-haves:
Sunscreen:
“Non-negotiable! I’m in the sun all day.”
Water bottle:
“Hydration is key, especially when I’m training.”
Whistle:
“Always ready for action.”
Running shoes:
“If I’m squeezing in a jog after work.”
Positive mindset:
“Every day at the beach is a good one.”
