The face behind your coffee: meet Senzo Shezi from Coffee Lab

If you’ve ordered a perfectly poured cortado at Coffee Lab in Ballito lately, chances are it came with a warm smile from Senzo Shezi.

Originally from Tongaat and later Waterloo, Senzo now lives in Stanger with his parents and sister. His life as a barista is a world away from his childhood. Raised by his grandmother, whom he sadly lost last year, Senzo never had the opportunity to attend school.
To survive, he did whatever work he could find, washing cars and selling wild mushrooms on the side of the road. It was while washing cars in Stanger that he was noticed by Sbu Nkolothi, owner of Coffee Lab.
Sbu first offered him a vacuum cleaner to help with his car-washing business. But he saw something more in Senzo and encouraged him to come for barista training instead.

A leap of faith
In 2020, Senzo took him up on the offer, even though he knew absolutely nothing about coffee. He still laughs about tasting his first cortado and adding a heap of sugar because it was far too bitter for his liking.
Under Sbu’s guidance, he learned not only how to steam milk and perfect his pour, but how to connect with people. At first, he felt scared and self-conscious. Over time, confidence replaced fear.

More than just coffee
Today, Coffee Lab feels like home. The team of baristas are like brothers to him, and he proudly takes his place as the “little brother” of the group.
The best part of the job? Getting to know different people and hearing their stories. Six years on, Senzo continues to learn new skills and is now helping to train new baristas. “It’s really amazing,” he says. “I never dreamed I could be a mentor to someone else.”
