Bridal designer Meliza Cilliers reimagines the modern wedding aesthetic with a playful, iridescent twist in this fun styled shoot.
When it comes to bridal style, tradition often takes centre stage, but for Meliza Cilliers, owner of Meliza Mary Bridal Wear, there’s beauty in stepping beyond the expected. In this imaginative editorial shoot, she leans into iridescence, light and a sense of childlike wonder to create something refreshingly different.
What inspired the overall look of this shoot?
Bridal shoots can sometimes feel a little generic: perfectly posed, polished and often trend-driven. I wanted to do something different. The idea sparked during a bride’s final fitting when she mentioned an emerging trend – iridescence – and it immediately resonated with me. I’ve always been drawn to anything with a bit of shine, and it felt fresh and unexpected.
There’s also a playful, slightly childlike element to it, which aligns with how we approach dress shopping. We always tell our brides to “come play dress-up” – like we’re six years old again, trying things on for the joy of it. From there, I explored how iridescence could translate into a bridal space, sourcing fabrics, prisms and props until it all came together.
What type of bride did you have in mind when styling it?
A bride who doesn’t want to look like everyone else – someone light-hearted, playful and not afraid to have fun with her look. This isn’t a serious aesthetic, and that’s the beauty of it.
Most brides wouldn’t use every element we featured – like oversized iridescent butterflies – but there are smaller details that feel exciting and unexpected.
What current bridal trends are reflected in the shoot?
There are subtle nods to what’s already happening in bridal – sparkle, sequins and that disco-inspired shimmer. But this wasn’t about following a single trend. Iridescence is more of a broader fashion movement, and while it’s starting to filter into bridal, it still feels new.
Any tips for brides wanting to recreate a similar look?
Start with the fabric – iridescent or sequin textures set the tone instantly. From there, layer in details. Prisms were key for me; they’re easy to source and create beautiful effects when paired with the right lighting, so chat to your photographer beforehand.
Your venue can also enhance the look. Natural light or stained glass helps create soft reflections, while subtle lighting in pinks, blues or purples can echo that iridescent feel.
Finish with thoughtful details – pearlescent jewellery, organza textures, delicate beading or even a soft glow in your makeup. Most importantly, keep it playful and don’t be afraid to try something unexpected.
