After more than two decades, Lifestyle SUPERSPAR is evolving once again – bigger, better and more in tune with the way Ballito lives today.

For many North Coast locals, a stop at Ballito Lifestyle Centre is woven into everyday life. It’s where morning coffee runs turn into catch-ups with friends, where families linger over breakfast after grocery shopping, and where familiar faces behind the counters make the experience feel personal. At the heart of it all has always been Lifestyle SUPERSPAR, and now, after 23 years, the much-loved store is preparing for its biggest transformation yet.

A fresh new look
Set to roll out in phases throughout the year, the extensive revamp promises far more than a cosmetic update. According to co-owner Bruce Rencken, the vision is to create a fresher, more intuitive shopping experience that reflects the way Ballito families live today.
“There’s a real focus on convenience, flow and quality,” he explains. “We’ve looked carefully at how people shop – whether it’s a quick stop for dinner ingredients or a full monthly grocery run – and designed the store around those needs.”

Designed around the way people shop
The expansion will see the store grow by an impressive 1 000 square metres, creating space for wider aisles, improved layouts and entirely new experiences. Some of the biggest changes will happen in the food departments locals know and love most. The butchery and bakery will double in size, while shoppers can also expect an artisanal deli and cheese section, an upgraded sushi offering and an expanded range of ready-to-eat and ready-heat meals for busy families.
Wine lovers are also in for something special, with a significantly larger wine department designed to feel more immersive and curated.

More than just a supermarket
But perhaps what makes the project most meaningful is the story behind it. Ballito Lifestyle Centre was founded in 2003 by brothers Paul Rencken and Bruce Rencken, who envisioned something different from the traditional shopping centre experience. Instead of simply creating a place to shop, they wanted to build a space connected to the rhythm of local life – somewhere community, connection and convenience could coexist.
More than two decades later, that philosophy still shapes every decision.

Keeping it in the family
As the next generation of the Rencken family steps into the business and Bruce is joined by his two sons, the revamp signals an exciting evolution while remaining rooted in the values that made the centre such a cornerstone of the North Coast community in the first place. Although naturally not without its challenges, Bruce describes working with his sons a real privilege, and an opportunity he is deeply grateful for.

What shoppers can expect
Importantly, the store will remain open throughout the renovation process. Construction will happen in carefully managed phases, much of it after hours, with staff and signage guiding customers through temporary changes along the way.
The first major reveal – expanded shopping space and the new wine department – is expected in June, followed by the unveiling of the new bakery and butchery. Additional upgrades, including the revamped deli, sushi experience and fresh produce section, will continue through to October.

A community-focused future
For Bruce, the transformation is ultimately about keeping pace with a growing community while staying true to what people already love about the store.
“We will always value family, community and the North Coast way of life,” he says. “This revamp is about evolving with our customers while continuing to create something meaningful for Ballito.”
