Women’s Month is about celebrating the women who lift others up, and few do that better than the women creating spaces where connection comes first. Across the North Coast, female-led communities are flourishing, offering something many of us didn’t realise we were missing: a place to belong. Whether you’re navigating motherhood, growing a business or simply searching for your tribe, these inspiring women are proving that meaningful connection can change lives.
ABI DOWNS, FOUNDER OF GIRL DINNER
For Abi, a memorable night out is about far more than beautiful food – it’s about creating meaningful connections.
Girl Dinner is a curated dining experience designed for women who want more than just dinner with friends. Every event brings together like-minded women around a beautifully styled table for a three-course fine dining experience, thoughtful conversation and genuine connection.
“I wanted to create a space where women could enjoy an incredible meal, share a drink and actually connect,” says Abi. “Every detail, from the setting and guest list to the conversation prompts and luxury goodie bags, is carefully considered. I want women to leave feeling special and talking about the experience long afterwards.”
Abi says the idea was born from recognising a growing need for authentic friendships in adulthood.
“So many women told me they’d outgrown old friendship circles or simply never had the opportunity to build new ones. I wanted to create the room I was looking for myself.”
She also wanted to bring an elevated dining experience to Durban – one inspired by the stylish social events she’d experienced while travelling abroad.
“I wanted women here to have those same beautiful experiences where you can dress up, enjoy exceptional food and meet inspiring people. We’ve welcomed everyone from students and doctors to entrepreneurs, marketers and corporate professionals. Building that network of women who genuinely support one another is incredibly important to me.”
While social media offers the illusion of connection, Abi believes nothing replaces sitting across the table from someone.
“Social media gives you the highlight reel of connection, not the feeling of it. Girl Dinner is intentionally offline, even though there are plenty of fabulous content moments. There’s something about sitting around a beautifully set table that encourages women to open up in ways they simply don’t online.”

MICHAYLA WHITE, FOUNDER OF HER VILLAGE BALLITO
When Michayla became a mother, she experienced the joy, uncertainty and loneliness that so many women quietly carry.
“I remember thinking, surely I’m not the only one who feels like this,” she says. “Motherhood was never meant to be done alone.”
Rather than waiting for the community she longed for, Michayla created it.
Her Village Ballito has grown into a thriving support network for mothers at every stage of the journey. From community events and monthly Circle gatherings to weekly walks, support groups for new mums and The Village Couch podcast, every offering is designed to encourage honest conversations and genuine friendships.
At its heart, Her Village is built on a simple philosophy: real women, real conversations and real support.
“It’s presence that social media can’t give you,” says Michayla. “You can’t hug someone through a screen, and you can’t hear someone’s voice crack in a comment section.”
One of her favourite memories came during the very first Her Village Circle gathering, when 17 women – most of them complete strangers – left the evening as friends.
“We actually got kicked out of the restaurant because we stayed so long,” she laughs. “Watching strangers become each other’s village in just a few hours reminded me exactly why this community exists.”
For Michayla, the growing demand for spaces like Her Village reflects a deeper truth.
“We’re more connected than ever before, yet somehow lonelier than ever. Deep down, women know we weren’t built to do life alone.”

JOVAN BEVIE, FOUNDER OF
For Jovan, connection has the power to transform not only individual women, but entire communities.
Founded as more than a networking group, ElevateHER Collective brings together entrepreneurs, professionals, creatives and ambitious women to collaborate, learn and encourage one another.
“Our mission is simple,” says Jovan. “When women support women, incredible things happen.”
The idea was born around a dinner table during a heartfelt conversation with her lifelong friend, Gugu Ncube. Together, they recognised that many women were achieving great things professionally while quietly carrying the weight of business, family and everyday life without a support system.
“I wanted to create a space where women could remove the masks, celebrate each other’s successes, share their struggles honestly and know they didn’t have to build their dreams alone.”
While social media keeps us connected, Jovan believes authentic relationships are built face to face.
“Our community is built on trust, encouragement and belonging – things that simply can’t be replicated through a screen.”
As women increasingly seek spaces where they can be vulnerable, celebrated and inspired, Jovan believes connection has become essential rather than optional.
“When one woman rises,” she says, “she inspires countless others to rise with her.”
