“I try to add a little spark to everything I do, just something that sets me apart from the rest. I try to be creative with whatever I do; this makes life interesting.”

This is according to Marelize Nieuwoudt, the Nursing Manager at Life Rosepark in Bloemfontein. Her job entails overseeing the nursing units in the hospital and ultimately building a solid rapport with all staff members and patients.

Marelize says a moment that stands out for her was submitting her master’s degree at the end of July. “It was a journey full of challenges; however, I believe it prepared me for becoming the Nursing Manager of Life Rosepark. This is a great privilege for me. I feel honoured to manage and lead a team of excellent staff.”

2022 is a special year for Marelize as she worked hard on completing her master’s degree and it has given her the opportunity to do a great deal of introspection. “I believe with the newly gained knowledge we will be able to take nursing as a science and art forward for the future.”

There are three key factors Marelize believes makes her successful. The first is her passion for people. “I am focussed on the feelings and emotions of people.” Second is the empowerment of people and how to discover the uniqueness of every individual. Lastly, she says looking after the health and wellbeing of the staff, as they are the cornerstone of the hospital.

When it comes to taking time for herself, Marelize says she tends to emerge in her work, and she still needs to work on a way to balance her life. She does however love reading, spending time outdoors, and making time for her family.

Marelize’s Favourites: “Give a girl the right shoes and she can conquer the world” – Marilyn Monroe.

As a nurse I believe you should walk tall and be proud of your profession; the right pair of shoes just gives you that extra oomph! You just appear a little prouder and stand a little taller.
