“Find your passion, walk the road of skills and insight thoroughly, and be resilient. It’s also just as important to learn from your peers, stay constant in your decision-making and read a lot.”

This food for thought for younger men was according to Dr Henk Jacobs, who is the owner and director of Doctor-on-call urgent care centre, as well as Dr HM Jacobs Inc. & Associates, where qualified doctors consult patients in need of urgent care, or do normal GP work.

Having found his passion and followed through with it, Dr Henk is a General Practitioner, working in the above-mentioned centres whilst being involved with the rehabilitation of patients after long hospital stays, frailty, joint replacements, and neurological deficits.

He explains that he knew this would be the journey he follows while he was still in primary school. “After a first aid course in Standard 4 (grade 6), I knew I wanted to be a doctor. I just love seeing people healthy and succeeding in life.”

But just as any journey, there have been challenges on the road and he said that through consistency, his business still stays afloat. “Consistency with care, long hours and good colleagues helped a lot. Being available to care and consult patients, with concurrent support from the hospitals, family and friends, made us realise how dependent we are.”

Above being a businessman, Dr Henk is also a family man and he describes his family as his biggest motivation. “My wife and my children are my biggest motivators, just seeing my daughters smile brings me joy and hope.”

He details that spending time with family and friends are one of the most important things to note, especially looking back at the start of his career. Above that he mentioned that being more involved and taking any opportunity to learn will always be a bonus.

Dr Henk says his mantra for a successful business is endurance, insight, resilience and God’s grace. “Above this, I owe my success to the people I work with, the patients who believe in us for a better quality of life and availability.”

Just as he believes in working hard, he also enjoys time off. “I like the outdoors, spending time with family and friends on vacations or travelling, or just being alone at times has worked for me to find peace and calm,” he concludes.
