Building strong, confident kids through fun and movement

Located in the heart of Westdene, Gymjam provides a safe space where children can explore gymnastics at their own pace while having fun. Founder Leandri van Niekerk spoke to Get It Bloemfontein about the importance of physical development in children through gymnastics and the development of skills.

Leandri highlights that children improve their physical health by refining their gross motor skills. This she says gives them an added sense of achievement that enhances their self-esteem.

Children’s physical development is a cornerstone of their overall growth, impacting their emotional, social, and academic development in profound ways. Physical activities help children develop strength, coordination, and motor skills, which are essential for interacting with their environment and building confidence.

“This confidence can have a positive impact on their emotional well-being, helping them manage stress and boosting their mood. Moreover, physical activities are instrumental in emotional regulation, as exercise releases endorphins that improve feelings of happiness and relaxation. When children are physically active, they often feel more in control of their bodies and more capable of handling challenges, which fosters resilience,” she explains.

She adds that physical development also plays a key role in social skills. Activities like team sports or group exercises teach children how to communicate, collaborate, and resolve conflicts with others.

Through physical play, Leandri says children develop vital social skills such as cooperation, empathy, and respect for others. “Whether in team sports or simple games like tag, these interactions encourage children to learn how to share, take turns, and build friendships. These social skills are crucial for forming meaningful relationships and succeeding in group environments, such as schools and later, the workplace.”

Furthermore, according to her, research has shown that children who engage in regular physical activity tend to perform better in school.

This means that the more they exercise they can enhance brain function that improves memory, focus, and problem-solving skills. Physical activity also helps improve fine motor skills, such as handwriting and drawing, which are essential for academic tasks. When children are physically active, they are better able to concentrate and absorb information in the classroom, making physical play a vital part of the academic experience.

Leandri advises trying gymnastics to enhance your child’s physical, emotional, and academic development.

“Gymnastics is a fantastic way for children to improve their strength, balance, flexibility, and coordination. Through gymnastic movements, children build a strong foundation of motor skills that will benefit them in many areas of life,” she says.

Leandri says it teaches discipline, perseverance, and focus. Children learn how to follow instructions, practice techniques, and refine their movements.

Through Gymjam, she aims to make the sport accessible and fun for children. The motto is, “Gymnastics Made Fun”, she says that it reflects the belief that physical development should be enjoyable and engaging. “We focus on teaching children the foundational gymnastics skills in a fun and supportive environment, where they can thrive emotionally, socially, and physically,” she explains.
