How to pick your wedding day glam

When it comes to looking flawless on your wedding day, professional makeup artist Lindsy Maru says the secret lies in planning ahead, knowing your skin, and preparing for anything – including wind, sweat, or even a storm.

In an interview featured on Bessie Young Photography’s website, Maru offered practical advice for brides navigating the often-overwhelming task of choosing their wedding makeup.

“The top tip I always share is to make sure your makeup matches the season,” said Maru. “Each season brings its own trendy colors and shades, so choose something that complements your wedding theme and your skin tone.”

She emphasises the importance of knowing your undertones and picking shades that enhance, rather than mask your natural beauty.

For brides who don’t typically wear makeup, Maru still recommends applying some on the big day. “Even if you don’t normally wear a lot of makeup, you’re going to want to for your pictures,” she explained. “Makeup helps balance lighting and brings out your best features on camera. A professional makeup artist can tailor your look to suit the lighting, your skin tone, and even the setting of your wedding.”

Maru is a strong advocate for doing a trial run before the big day. “It lets you see what works for you and what doesn’t. A look that seems simple might actually be more complicated, and not everything you see online will suit your face shape or skin tone,” she said. “A trial run also gives you the chance to build trust with your makeup artist, which can reduce your stress.”

When it comes to unpredictable weather, preparation is key. “Whether it’s wind, rain, or extreme heat, a good setting spray or powder can make all the difference. For wind, I recommend extra foundation on the cheeks to avoid redness. For heat, stay away from creamy products – they don’t hold up well,” Maru advised.

She also offered guidance on how much makeup is enough: “You’re going to want to wear more than usual. It helps with photos and makes your entire look feel complete. Think of makeup as an accessory — it ties everything together.”

Maru said there’s no rule when it comes to matching bridesmaids’ makeup. “Some brides want to stand out, while others prefer a more uniform, natural look for the whole party. It’s really about what makes the bride feel happiest.”

For DIY brides, she suggested practising the chosen look several times before the wedding and testing it in different environments. “You’ll want to know exactly how it holds up in heat or cold. Invite your bridesmaids over for a fun test session and don’t forget to bring your makeup kit – and a compact mirror – with you on the big day for quick touch-ups.”

Whether you’re hiring a pro or going solo, Maru’s message is clear: thoughtful planning and a personalised touch will help you feel confident and radiant when you walk down the aisle.
