Bonding through baking: biscuits, family, and the sweetness of unforgettable moments.
Growing up, the kitchen was the heart of our home and not just a place where meals were prepared, but where memories were made. My grandmother visited us often and her and my mother’s favourite bonding activity was baking.
Unlike most families who might bake only on special occasions, ours didn’t need a reason. Whether it was a Tuesday afternoon or a quiet Saturday morning, the sound of mixing bowls clinking and the scent of vanilla and butter were common in our household. For them, baking wasn’t another task but it was a form of connection, their love language.
I still remember coming home from school to the warm smell of freshly baked biscuits. The kitchen would be in a beautiful state of chaos that had flour on the counters, sticky bits of dough clinging to spoons, egg shells tucked into bowls, and the air filled with laughter and conversation. It wasn’t just a mess, but one that loudly conveyed joy and togetherness.
Over time, I joined in too. I’d start with simple tasks like cutting out shapes or sprinkling sugar and slowly graduated to mixing and measuring. With every batch of biscuits, I gained a little more skill, but more importantly, I felt a deeper connection to the women who had shaped my life.
Whenever I visit home, I find myself smiling at the memory of a kitchen filled with warmth, both literally and emotionally. The biscuits we baked weren’t just treats but were symbols of love, resilience, and the kind of everyday magic that turns ordinary afternoons into lifelong memories.
