SHE MEANS BUSINESS: Dr Marileen Roos- Cure Day

Dr Marileen Roos stands out in Bloemfontein as a beacon of compassion and dedication in the field of Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) care. Dr Marileen balances her professional expertise with a deep commitment to family and community. “I’m a devoted mother to two energetic boys and a passionate person, driven by the desire to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those around me,” she shares.

Her belief in kindness and hard work shines through in her daily mission to uplift her patients, particularly children, through life-changing ENT surgeries. Dr Marileen’s journey into medicine began in 2009, but it was in 2012 that her passion for ENT care truly ignited. “I was especially drawn to the life-changing impact ENT surgeries have on patients, particularly children,” she explains. Over the years, her focus has deepened, finding fulfilment in guiding parents through their children’s health journeys while also supporting adults with general ENT care.

Her inspiration stems from remarkable mentors who highlighted the profound impact of addressing hearing loss. “Assisting patients in regaining control of their lives through hearing rehabilitation has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my career,” she reflects.

Raised in a steadfast family where failure was never an option, Dr Marileen embodies resilience. “My passion to support mothers in helping their children thrive is one of the many things that drives me forward,” she says. This determination was tested during a challenging period when her family faced a battle with cancer. “The experience taught us the true value of community, faith, and support,” she recalls, emphasising the importance of standing together in tough times.

In the operating theatre, clad in her theatre scrubs, Dr Marileen feels most empowered. “It represents the space where I feel most empowered, focused, and fulfilled,” she notes. Outside work, she cherishes cycling with her family and long walks with friends to recharge. As a self-proclaimed “boy-mum”, she never leaves home without plasters, quipping, “A simple plaster can work magic on most tears and tumbles”.

Balancing her demanding career with family life, Dr Marileen prioritises organisation and self-care. “Taking care of myself and spending quality time with loved ones allows me to show up with the love, compassion, and empathy that my patients deserve,” she says. Through her unwavering dedication, she continues to transform lives, one patient at a time.

Dr Marileen practises at Cure Day Hospitals Bloemfontein, where same-day surgery streamlines patient care, reducing costs and promoting faster recovery. The hospital’s child-friendly environment ensures young patients feel at ease.
