This month, we speak to some of Bloem’s greatest gardeners about their expertise, passion, and what makes their green thumbs thrive.
Grounded in a lifelong appreciation for nature, nursery owner Janet Müller from Groen Aarde reflects on how gardening has evolved into a source of peace, purpose, and connection.
What inspired you to start gardening, and what keeps your passion for it alive today?
A passion and love for nature! It keeps me calm, and it is also a physically active lifestyle. I also enjoy giving advice to others to help them create a beautiful and tranquil garden.
What’s your top tip for Bloemfontein gardeners looking to grow healthy, thriving plants – whether indoors, in a garden, or even in small spaces?
Make sure your soil is well-drained. Keep fertilising and protect your plants in winter. If you could only grow one plant for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?
I would choose clivias, as they produce the most beautiful flowers.
How do you involve family, friends, or the community in your gardening projects?
By making time to visit their homes or businesses and advising them on what and where to plant. I also offer planting or landscaping services for small spaces.
What’s the biggest plant myth you wish people would stop believing?
That plants can keep away bad spirits or bring you money.
What’s the most rewarding part of managing a nursery?
Seeing new blossoms and receiving pictures from clients of how beautifully their plants are growing.
