“Literacy is the best remedy”. This theme was specially selected by UNESCO to celebrate their International Literacy Day on 8 September 2019. Every year this organisation tirelessly raises global awareness on issues surrounding adult and child literacy, and this year is no different.

Learners participating in Red Reading Box activities

READ Educational Trust likes to take things one step further, and celebrate the whole of September as Literacy Month. One of the activities that has proved hugely successful over the past few years is the launch of the Readathon Red Reading Box, a priceless tool used to encourage reading amongst a broad cross-section of learners.

This year marks the launch of the seventh Red Reading Box, and what better way than to launch a BUMPER Red Reading Box in 2019!

“We’ve taken the best of the best activities and games from all previous Red Reading Boxes, and crammed them into a Bumper Edition,” READ PR & Fundraising Manager, Lizelle Langford explains. “The popular character, Hobala, introduces each story and activity and entices learners to participate and have fun learning.”

So what’s in the Bumper Red Reading Box? The ‘Flags of Africa’ map and card game are included, as is a book of Super Stories, bound to appeal to young superhero fans. The ‘About Me!’ poster boosts young readers’ self-image, focusing on their talents, their favourite things, special people in their lives, and their ambitions.

‘Discover the World’ games broaden children’s horizons, teaching them interesting facts about other countries, and the ‘Fairy Tale Guessing Card Game’ unlocks a fantasy world of epic proportions.

A truly great addition to any classroom or home with school-going children in it, the Bumper Red Reading Box 2019 is suitable for kids in Grade 4, right through to those in high school.

As part of READ’s Literacy Month activities, 3 000 boxes will be distributed to children in underprivileged areas across South Africa.  Over the 7-year period that the Red Reading Boxes have been distributed, over 23 500 children have been reached through this initiative.

Educators and parents (and grandparents!) are encouraged to buy a Readathon Bumper Red Reading Box for only R255. Every cent of the profits is ploughed back into promoting literacy in disadvantaged communities across South Africa.
