Zero just happened

Zero waste. Zero plastic. Zero cruelty. We’re mad about the new Zero Bar shampoo … a proudly local product that’s concentrated, water-free, plastic-free and cruelty-free. Designed to last through between 55 and 70 hair washes, outlasting most bottled shampoos, there are four to choose from  (called the four Bar Bros) … a Argean bar (liquid gold, filled with nutrients), Jojoba (a real hair booster), the Moringa bar (which strengthens and rejuvenates your hair) and Wild Desert Melon (surprisingly light, with easily absorbed oil). All four have loads of nutrients, vitamins and minerals, and promise to clean, enrich, moisturise, condition, shine, strengthen, nourish, soothe and repair. Only available on line at the moment, they cost R75 each, or R300 for a pack (all the same, or one of each). Details: www.zerobar.co.za.

Proof that wishes really do come true

Wish on Florida is the brainchild of young businessmen, Benny Maverick and Wayne Ndlovu. Launched in December, Wish is an upmarket Italian restaurant and bar specializing in gourmet cuisine, and boasts the finest local and international champagne and wine brands. Why we love it so much? Wish goes beyond beautiful with its modern, fresh, minimal aesthetic, laced with hints of pink, green, marble and gold… all designed around the focal point of a fountain into which guests can toss ‘gold’ coins (sold for R10 each by the restaurant) and make their own personal wish! The menu is a sight to behold with its New York style pizza slices, delicious pastas and creamy mussels that tempt the fussiest of palates. And best of all, Wish gives back through the Wish Foundation – a hub aimed at aiding young Durban entrepreneurs in their business ventures. Open Monday to Wednesday from 12pm till late, and Thursday to Sunday from 12pm to 2am, you’ll find Wish at 198 to 200 Florida Road. Good things take time

So this month we’re all about taking décor to new level, by adding woven textures of a different kind… the kind that offer pets a natural, breathable space to call their home. The Cabin is the brainchild of Arkivio, a local bespoke lighting and furniture design company founded by friends Paul Rabinowitz and Lance Surgeson, who share a passion for creating beautiful things in their studio right here in Durbs. Hand-woven by the KZN Blind & Deaf Society using 100 per cent locally sourced materials, production time for a Cabin is around four weeks, but the result is a unique product that supports a great cause. Available in small (R2 690) or medium (R3 390), you can have one made in natural or black rattan to suit your preference. Details: [email protected] or contact 066 1194 322.

Scatter your home beautiful

Oh how we love our scatter cushions! The decor element that instantly transforms a room with pretty pops of colour, texture and design. On our hunt for a few gorgeous new ones, we stumbled upon The Cushion Affair, who specialise in all things to do with fabric because they love revitalizing drab and dreary spaces. From curtains, upholstery and blinds, to patio suites, pool loungers, umbrellas, furniture covers and of course our personal faves… scatters. The effervescent woman behind the business, Louise Holscher, has become a front runner in supplying top outdoor furniture manufacturers, interior decorators and individuals with the kind of patio and outdoor stuff that makes your jaw drop! You can see it all for yourself online at www.thecushionaffair.co.za or contact [email protected]

An olive affair

The December holidays brought lots of sun, fun and new discoveries, one of which was The Olive Lady Delicatessen, located on the bottom level of Kloof Village Mall. This food-loving family-run deli branches off of Romesco Olives, our favourite Midlands Meander stop off specialising in marinating the noble olive in extra virgin olive, bathing them in special tangy marinades and stuffing them with your favourite ingredients. The idea behind The Olive Lady Delicatessen was to offer a specialist store stocking family-produced, as well as locally sourced quality, artisanal products, so that those who never really get out to the Midlands have easier access to these delicious products. Organically decorated, the deli boasts tables of olives and shelves of pestos, chutneys and tapenades; some free-range cured meats from The Real Meat Co; and pantry products that create one hellova tasty olive affair. Next time you’re in the hood, pop in and have a little taste teaser. You won’t be disappointed, nor will you leave empty-handed. We certainly didn’t!
