Obstetrics and Gynaecology specialist, Dr Marise Subrayan, has opened a practice a St Augustine’s hospital in Durban, after serving the North Coast for the past few years.

Dr Subrayan is a force of nature – her smile could light up the night sky and her tangible, infectious energy could power Eskom for days.

“I have recently moved my practice and my home to Durban to join the team at the beautiful St Augustine’s Hospital. It is a great way to mark the 10th anniversary of my practice!” she enthused.

The ethos of this practice is to encourage education and female empowerment, assisting women in making individualised, informed decisions about their physical, mental and sexual health. She has interests in hormonal disorders, sexual-dysfunction and aesthetic gynaecology. Her practice is LGBTQ+ friendly, and she collaborates with a multi-disciplinary team to provide care for this under-serviced community.

Dr Marise Subrayan grew up in Durban – born in Reservoir Hills, she lived in Avoca and Effingham, before moving to Gauteng where she completed both her medical degree and O&G specialisation through the University of Witwatersrand (WITS), and her Aesthetic Gynaecology training through the International Association of Aesthetic Gynaecology and Sexual Well-being (IAAGSW).

She has been practicing O&G since 2013 and has gained a firm foundation from her many years of training being predominately performed at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital (CHBAH).

Dr Subrayan has presented her research on female genital mutilation both locally and overseas at the prestigious RCOG conference held in London, UK. She has a keen interest in continuing further research in O&G and has been involved in numerous COVID vaccine studies and presents at academic events to promote education on vaccination in pregnancy.

After initially collaborating with several Johannesburg practices, Dr Subrayan launched her own practice in Ballito, KZN. This in turn led to the opportunity to establish a practice at St Augustine’s Hospital.

Become gynae and vagina savvy!

Dr Subrayan says the conversation about women’s health should start earlier than in previous generations, as these day’s girls start mensturating from 10 or 11 years onwards.

“How can a child have the emotional maturity to start with periods at such a young age, without conversations and guidance? If a child is growing up in a household without female influences, or in a conservative home where these things aren’t discussed, the child will have no clue what is happening to their bodies and their changing emotions. That is why a gynae is important so we can chat to them and offer accurate information.  We can teach girls how to use a tampon the correct way and guide them on new innovations and techniques like menstrual cups, which is a viable alternative to tampons and pads.”

Dr Subrayan says people need to know that some medical aid covers gynae visits from the age of 16 until 65. “I would love to see more young women, ideally seeing a girl-child from the age of 16 onwards, to make the notion of visiting a gynae a familiar one and to pave the way for ongoing good gynae health.”

Her practice welcomes partners, parents and friends. She says there is no need to show up for your appointment alone. Regular gynae check-ups are important. Gyneas offer specialist advice on a host of areas, including the correct use of condoms; useful preventative birth control methods, avoiding STIs and the importance of a regular pap-smear – among others. Plus, as specialists in their field they stay up to date with new guidelines and techniques in all areas of their speciality.

Gay

Dr Subrayan welcomes gay, trans and lesbian patients. “We offer a safe space for people of different sexual identities and orientations to receive gynae care. If you are female, as in biological or assigned-at-birth-gender female, we can help. Regardless of your sexual partner’s orientation, females need pap-smears and cervical cancer tests, and require ongoing gynae assessment.”

Dr Subrayan also specialises in aesthetics and pregnancy and her warm and caring nature will make anyone feel comfortable and relaxed while consulting with her.
