Interior of a modern apartment, comfortable living room

Moody, natural, sustainable, vividly rich … interior design trends shape how we decorate and style our homes. With a background in construction and a passion for interior design, Nomfundo Mtetwa of Mauve Interiors shares the biggest and brightest for 2023.

When Nomfundo and her husband bought their first home together, she saw endless adventure in decorating their home herself … with a little research and some help from a local interior design company of course. It didn’t take long for her to fall in love with the idea of taking her part time hobby to a full time thing and by 2018; Mauve Interiors was birthed and hit the ground running.

As its creative director, she heads a team that comprises of a professional interior architect, a fine arts graduate and part-time architect and professional quantity surveyor who looks after any projects that come with construction elements, and together, they work harmoniously to create functional and aesthetically pleasing spaces that are structurally sound and feasible to build.

With 2023 shaping up to be a year of bold colours, natural materials, closed floor plans, mixed metal finishes, luxury living and vintage-inspired furniture, Nomfundo says whether you prefer a classic, modern or eclectic look, these trends offer plenty of options for creating a stylish and functional home.

Bold, deep, moody, vividly rich and warm colours are making a come-back. Deep blues, rich greens, beiges and browns and rich purples are also popular colour palettes for 2023. This trend emphasizes the use of colour as a statement piece to create an impactful look. Expect to see rich jewel tones like emerald green, sapphire blue and ruby red incorporated into home decor. Another popular trend is using these colours in monochromatic form that features a single colour scheme throughout a room or space. This approach to design creates a harmonious and cohesive look by using different shades, tones, and textures of one colour to add interest and depth into a space.”

Monochromatic design can be calming, soothing, and elegant, making it a popular choice for modern, minimalist spaces. The most common colours used in monochromatic design include black, white, grey, beige and blue.

Tips: Ensure that the space has enough natural and artificial lighting as these tones can make the space look and feel dark. To achieve this look, paint the skirtings, walls and ceilings different tones and sheens of the same colour.

Natural materials (wood) and natural stone surfaces (marble, granite and slate) are becoming increasingly popular in home décor this season. These surfaces offer a timeless look, durability and versatility that complement a range of styles, and will continue to be popular in interior design.

Tips: Don’t be shy with the marble. Go bold, and make sure everything else is muted so that the marble takes centre stage. Spend that little extra for good quality stones and make sure you have an accredited installer to eliminate mistakes.

Sustainability will continue to be a key trend in interior design, with an emphasis on using eco-friendly materials, reducing waste and incorporating sustainable design practices, and repurposing old vintage furniture.

Tips: Sustainable materials to consider when designing your home include bamboo, linen, hemp, recycled glass (can be used for tiles, countertops, light pendants and more), low VOC Paints and natural stone.

Textured walls, such as those created with slats, and the modern, classic wall panelling painted with the monochromatic paint colours will continue to be popular in 2023.

Tips: Textured walls give you space to be creative, but select one texture that complements the overall aesthetic of your space. Things to consider … The purpose of the space; balancing texture with the right colour scheme (choose colours that complement and create a harmonious look); consider how natural and artificial light will play off the texture; add texture in moderation.

Cleverly designed closed floor plans are becoming more popular, with a focus on creating functional and efficient spaces that can be used for both work and play, as people continue to work from home and look for ways to make the most of their living spaces. This trend involves separating different areas of the home with walls and pocket doors, maximizing privacy and reducing noise.

Tips: Consider the flow of the space; maximize storage; be mindful of lighting; invest in soundproofing to reduce noise and improve privacy; make use of multi-functional furniture (like a sofa bed or a table that can be used as a workspace) to maximize space.

Mixed Metal Finishes is a growing trend in home decor. This involves combining different metals, such as brass, copper, and chrome, to create an eclectic and sophisticated look.

Tips: Choose complementary metals to create a balanced and harmonious look; use varying textures (like matte and shiny) to add depth and interest to a space; create a focal point that creates a visual hierarchy and makes a statement; consider the room’s overall style; choose hardware finishes that match the dominant metal to create a cohesive look; don’t be afraid to try new combinations and mix-and-match until you find the right balance for your space.

Lux Living: The concept of luxury living is becoming increasingly popular, with a focus on high-end materials, furnishings and accessories. This trend involves creating a space that is stylish and comfortable, with a focus on quality and functionality.

Tips: Invest in quality materials like marble, silk and hardwood for a luxurious feel; mix different textures to add depth and interest to the room; use a combination of overhead lighting, table lamps, and floor lamps to create a warm and inviting atmosphere; make a statement with a large piece of art, a beautiful chandelier, or a unique piece of furniture; create symmetry using matching seating and accessories on either side of a room; integrate smart home technology into the design of your home, allowing for a more automated and convenient experience; incorporate greenery (potted plants, hanging plants, or even a vertical garden) for a natural, soothing touch.

60s and 70s Influences in Design Furniture These are having a major impact on home decor and furniture design. Expect to see vintage-inspired pieces, bold patterns, and bold colours in furniture, as well as a return to organic shapes and natural materials.

Tips: Consider incorporating vintage or retro-inspired pieces into your design; use statement-making hues like orange, yellow, and green in your furniture choices; embrace organic shapes (rounded edges, flowing curves); bring in textured fabrics, vintage-inspired details or other unique embellishments; use pieces that feature natural materials like wood, stone and bamboo.
