For the boys with a big appetite … triple-cheese filled burgers

Enjoy these burgers with a three-cheese filling with a glass or two of Allesverloren Cabernet Sauvignon or Allesverloren Tinta Barocca. Makes four.

PATTIES – 50g each grated gruyere, grated mature white cheddar and cremezola • 800g high-fat mince • 2 Tbsp chopped fresh parsley • 3 Tbsp breadcrumbs • 1 Tbsp mustard • Salt and freshly milled pepper • 1/4 cup of your favourite smokey barbecue sauce

TO SERVE – 4 buns of your choice (we used brioche) • 8 slices ripe tomato • 1 cup baby salad leaves • 1/4 cup creamy mustard mayonnaise • Chips or salad

METHOD – To make the patties, mix all the cheeses together and divide into four equal quantities. Mix the mince, parsley, breadcrumbs, seasoning, and mustard, and divide into 4 equal pieces.

Divide each quarter of mince mixture into 2 equal pieces and flatten them into patties. Add the cheese to the centre of one patty, pop the other one on top, and squeeze the ends together sealing the edges well.

Braai the patties (or cook them on a griddle pan or normal non-stick pan). If you’re cooking in a pan, heat the pan until hot, add the patties, and leave to cook for about five minutes on the one side before turning and cooking on the other side. There should be enough fat in the patties to stop the meat from sticking. Cook until the patties are done to your liking. Brush with your favourite BBQ sauce. Toast the rolls in a pan too and then assemble the burgers with the tomato, leaves, sauce, and patties.

Enjoy with a glass of Allesverloren Cabernet Sauvignon 2019 … it’s a rich and full-bodied wine, all berry fruit flavours such as blackcurrant and cherries with undertones of dark chocolate. Besides the cheese-filled burger, it also pairs well with poultry, and grilled or roasted red meat dishes like beef or game. You’ll find it for around R175 from your local wine store, or online from allesverloren.co.za

When dad complains about being exhausted, and looks it, it’s time for this Clinique For Men Super Energizer, an anti-fatigue hydrating concentrate that may not solve his sleep probs, but he’ll look a whole lot more energised. It’s got an SPF 40, too, so good for outdoor men. R1050. Both from Woolworths.

Swanky coolers

When Ronan Keating asks the Fieldbar team how he can get his hands on one of their hardbox coolers before he leaves the country, you know they’re cool. So stylish, boasting 50 hours ‘Champagne Cold’ ice performance, these Fieldbar coolers are modern, durable, comfy to carry, with a genuine, double-stitched off-cut leather comfort handle (with your name or initials engraved onto the leather strap to make it extra special). They’re made locally, each is numbered, and there’s a Fieldbar Owners Club (so swag). It’s deceptive … slim and elegant but has a 10l capacity, and comes in lovely shades … like this Orchard Orange but also Oyster Grey, Safari White, Bazaruto Blue, Parisian Green and Sea Boat Blue.
