Home décor upgrades and design renovations can improve the value of your property, and ultimately enhance your quality of life.

Last year, work from home spaces were a major trend, as were open plan designs and the incorporation of green into décor plans. Ally Nezar of Kandua, an online marketplace for home services, and architectural technologist Eric Turck, unpack their predictions for the top four home improvement trends in 2023.

Outdoor entertainment wins

In 2022, more homeowners invested in outdoor home renovations, elevating their outdoor spaces to create comfortable, chic and welcoming spaces. With more time spent outside and an increased focus on wellness as well as on quality time spent with loved ones, this trend will continue through 2023. “Look out for more outdoor kitchens, stylish seating areas and fire pits. Homeowners are going to maximise the value they get out of their home spaces, because the home is a multitasking environment where we work, create an escape from stress, nurture relationships and play. Home upgrades that offer a comfortable environment and with the benefit of uninterrupted power supply will give homeowners the best of both worlds.”

Energy and water smart

Thanks to regular loadshedding and power failures, solar panels and boreholes are on every homeowner’s wish list, in a trend that won’t be slowing down in 2023, as they enable homeowners to secure their supply of water and electricity.

“Most solar energy systems deliver reliable electricity supply for 25 years-plus, ensuring productivity is retained if you work from home. You’ll usually recoup the installation costs in just a few years, and homes fitted with solar technology sell more quickly than homes without alternative power options, which makes solar energy a good investment for homeowners.”

Home office trends

The building, renovation and decoration of home offices are becoming an increasingly popular home improvement trend, as more people work remotely or in hybrid settings.

“Homeowners are converting spaces in their homes to create a dedicated work area. They’re installing shelves and cupboards to keep the space neat and organised.”

Don’t neglect your bathroom

A bathroom renovation can make a big difference in the feel of a home, as well as its resale value. A big, round bathtub or walk-in shower introduces an element of luxury, while a calming, soothing décor colour scheme promotes relaxation. Driven by our desire to achieve and maintain good physical and mental health and longevity, further design trends expected to dominate bathroom renovations include statement tiles throughout, and heated floors that will recreate that luxurious spa experience.

“Overall, the focus will be on creating a spa-like and personalised experience, with an emphasis on functionality and minimalism. Homeowners will be making very considered choices about everything from the bathtub and the shower, to the paint colour.”
