Find your Winter happiness

We’ve hit that mid-year slump. The cold weather and long, dark (load shedding-filled) nights are enough to make anyone feel down. But with a few good habits, you can adjust your internal cocktail of endorphins – most integral to happiness – and shake off the blues!

Eat well

Eating well during winter can boost your mood in two ways – it helps keep your weight in check and by eating foods that are naturally rich in fibre, you improve your gut health, so as tempting as it is to tuck into a warm takeaway or homemade pasta on cold nights, these are by no means the best foods to improve your mood. Rather take the time to pick a mouth-watering recipe, shop for quality ingredients, and lovingly craft a delicious home cooked, healthy meal that will reenergise you and make it far easier to push through winter.

Surround yourself with people

Winter might make you feel like crawling into bed and avoiding human contact. That’s one of the worst things you can do for your health, so go out of your way to avoid isolation. Pick up the phone and reap the rewards of hearing a friendly voice, get together with loved ones because engaging with other people makes a very big difference to your happiness.

Get up and get dressed

Never underestimate the power of an outfit you feel good in. Even if you’re just heading out for coffee, slip into your favourite threads and work it!

Vitamin D and exercise

Yes, it’s colder outside, but even a sliver of sun is worth stepping outdoors and soaking in because our mood is lifted by getting more sunshine and light. Break a sweat by going for a walk around the block (even better with a neighbour, friend or your pooch). Explore your garden when the sun is out or even simply find a warm place outside to sit comfortably and read a good book.

There’s power in positive thinking

Try to be a glass-half-full person. The best way to get started? Think happy thoughts. Write down three things you’re grateful for – hot showers, the sound of rain, family, a place to call home, your closest friends. Don’t think of positivity as a personality trait that you do or don’t have. Think of it as a skill you can hone.

Do something nice for someone else

Random acts of kindness go a long way to making the world go round. Not only that, but they make you glow from the inside out so surprise someone you care about a bunch of flowers or gift them with a batch of luxurious homemade brownies.

Spoil YOU

Flowers are a great mood booster so treat yourself to a bunch, and bring a pop of colour and feel-good into your home. If you prefer dessert to blooms, indulge in an after dinner treat or pour yourself a glass of wine to enjoy. If you are a lover of self-pampering then treat your skin and hair to a treatment mask, creamy moisturiser, or luxurious oil.

Listen to happy music or meditate

Whether you enjoy calming jazz or upbeat hip hop, music is a great way to elevate your mood. Throw in some dancing and you’ll get a workout too! If you prefer something a little more peaceful, try meditating for a few minutes every day to free up some space in your mind (to then fill with your newfound happiness). Find a quiet, comfy spot, close your eyes and take a few deep breaths.

Unleash your creativity

Whether you’re arty or not, Winter is a great time to bring out your paint pots and brushes, or your stashed away craft goodies and create something beautiful. If you’re a mom, get the kids involved. If you’re solo and don’t know where to start, why not join a pottery, jewellery making or craft workshop close by?

Improve your living space

A simple shift in your living space can make all the difference in the world when it comes to your happiness. Open the curtains and let natural light in, light scented candles to fill your home, bring the outdoors in with a plant or three that you can watch grow with your love and care, go through your wardrobe and cupboards and declutter any areas that feel messy. Infuse some colour and fun into your home with some new framed photos, DIY or bought art and decor that speaks to you.

Give yourself something to look forward to

Whether it’s a drive to the Midlands, a weekend away with the girls or your other half, or something else you’ve got on your bucket list, give yourself something to look forward to by planning a new adventure. Or, work on some spring-themed home décor ideas, create your own travel board for a destination you’ve always wanted to explore – anything is possible if you dream enough.
