Bill Buchanan – a legacy of elder care

Bill Buchanan Association for the Aged has been providing secure, comfortable and loving environments for senior citizens – whether fit or frail – for the past 50 years in Durban.

With a variety of lodgings available, lower- and upper-income retired senior citizens are accommodated in environments that support their physical, emotional and social needs, and ensuring they have access to nutritious meals, comfortable living and a caring community.

Life Right cottages and flats provide independent living for the fit and able, retired senior citizens under the age of 80, who wish to partake in the Life Right scheme. Life Right residents have access to all Buchanan House’s facilities and social activities. Each garden unit is visited daily by a care giver under the supervision of a district sister.

Buchanan Heights consist of one or two bedroom apartments on the sixth and seventh floor of Buchanan House, and has beautiful views of the green trees of Burman Bush.

Jace Graham Place consists of 16 two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartments for married couples, with drive-in access and a single garage adjoining each flat. There are eight upper units with a balcony, and eight lower units with garden access.

Brian Porritt Place is the most recent complex with drive-in access units. There are 10 two-bedroom, two-bathroom units, and two one-bedroom, one-bathroom units. The upper flats have a balcony with a scenic view, and the lower apartments open onto a small garden area. These units are close to the main building, with easy access to all activities in the home.

Neville Becker Close consists of four two-bedroom cottages for married couples that are situated on the border of the property in a private cul-de-sac and have their own small gardens.

Buchanan House offers single and double-room accommodation, with shared bathrooms or ensuite rooms. Each floor has a fully furnished lounge and laundry room. All meals are provided and rooms are serviced weekly. There is also an on-site clinic with trained staff and a social worker, while the Buchanan Social Club organises regular activities that are well supported and enjoyed by residents.

Buchanan House Library has more than 5 900 books – 439 in large print and over 180 puzzles.

Adjoining Buchanan House is Emmerson House, which offers 24-hour frail care, and accommodation for 80 residents. Activities such as art, pet therapy, church services and music concerts are regularly provided.

Next is Benson Gardens, comprising seven buildings including a community hall. Various accommodation options are available – from units for single women to flats for married couples or single residents. Here, residents can often be found socialising around braais, attending events in the community hall, or organising outings.

Helen Gibling Gardens offers accommodation in beautiful studio flats set in tranquil surroundings, for retirees under the age of 80. Residents can enjoy independent living while having access to all Buchanan House facilities and social activities. Each garden flat is visited daily by a caregiver, under the supervision of a district nursing sister.

The association’s complex, Arcadia, situated in the Bluff, accommodates female residents in single units with shared ablutions. It also offers studio flats for singles or couples and includes a community hall for social activities.

Each complex is under the care of a supervisor, who is responsible for administration and residents well-being. All complexes are regularly visited by a qualified nursing sister, assisted by three nurse aides. Residents in the ‘district’ complexes are given priority admission to either Buchanan House or the full-care facility, Emmerson House.
