The weight of hope

In her latest book, Cindy Norcott shares 20 years of unfiltered wisdom from the frontline of non-profit work. We dive into the hard truths, the heart-led lessons and how you can start 2026 with purpose, hope and action.

As the year winds down, it’s natural to reflect on what’s passed and what we hope to carry into the New Year. Few people embody this reflection and purposeful action better than popular motivational speaker, entrepreneur, business coach, philanthropist and author, Cindy Norcott. In her latest book, The Weight of Hope, Cindy distils two decades at the helm of Durban’s Robin Hood Foundation into a heartfelt roadmap for change-makers, non-profit leaders and anyone ready to turn hope into action.

The title itself carries a personal significance for Cindy. “Hope is not a fleeting emotion,” she explains. “It can transform a person, a family, a community, and even a country. Being a hope-bearer is heavy work, and this book is dedicated to those who carry hope for others.”

Marking the 20th anniversary of the Robin Hood Foundation and her decision to step down as chairperson, Cindy wanted to leave a guide for others navigating the challenging non-profit space. From the heartbreaks of Covid, looting, and flooding to personal losses, Cindy shares her most emotional experiences alongside practical, actionable lessons for anyone committed to making a difference.

Cindy emphasises that non-profit work is far from soft or fun. Effective social impact requires organization, research, dignity for beneficiaries, and relentless fundraising. Her book doesn’t shy away from these realities. With chapters covering volunteer management, fundraising strategies, avoiding burnout, and maintaining hope amid adversity, readers are offered a blueprint grounded in real-world experience.

For non-profit leaders, it’s a practical guide; for anyone wanting to make a difference, it offers both inspiration and actionable steps.
“I hope readers close the book understanding that even small, humble acts matter,” Cindy says. “This book equips people to become change-makers, no matter the size of their role.”

Lessons for the festive season and beyond

Cindy’s work with the Robin Hood Foundation, especially the Bless a Granny initiative, taught her that the greatest gifts aren’t material. “Time and attention are truly important gifts,” she says. In an era often dominated by commercialised gift-giving, Cindy encourages giving experiences, supporting local creatives, or simply offering time, attention and a heartfelt gesture. These are simple, daily practices she shares to help you keep giving at the heart of your life.

  • Begin each day with gratitude.
  • Reach out to one person daily to show you care.
  • Give something free but priceless – a smile, a hug or a warm handshake.
  • Do one good deed daily – let someone ahead in line or buy a coffee for a stranger.
  • Help someone who cannot repay you.
  • Make the world brighter through communication, recognition and acknowledgment.
  • End the day reflecting on three new things to be thankful for.

7 purpose-driven habits for 2026

Cindy encourages reflection before the New Year to set intentions with clarity.

  1. Define one big personal goal that will make you proud in 2026.
  2. Identify habits that no longer serve you and reduce or eliminate them.
  3. Choose one thing to do more of that brings joy or growth.
  4. Decide on a theme for your year – e.g., adventure, deep friendships, saying no.
  5. Set one goal each for personal, work, and family life.
  6. Commit to your top five core values.
  7. Include a fun goal, just because you can.
