With the upcoming East Coast Radio House + Garden Show themed Dream, Create & Live, we’re leaning into décor that feels personal, creative and beautifully liveable. Dreaming is easy. Creating takes intention. Living means making it practical. Here’s how to do all three.
DREAM – start with vision, not budget
Before buying anything new, ask …
- How do I want this room to feel? Calm? Energised? Cosy? Creative?
- What do I already own that I love?
Create a mini mood board using …
- Magazine tear-outs
- Paint swatches
- Fabric samples
- Screenshots saved on your phone
Durban homes respond beautifully to natural textures, layered whites, woven elements and indoor plants that echo our
subtropical climate.
CREATE – small changes, big impact
You don’t need a renovation to refresh a room.
Try this instead …
- Rearrange furniture for better flow.
- Swap cushions seasonally.
- Introduce one statement piece, a lamp, mirror or bold artwork.
- Layer lighting, overhead lights alone can feel harsh.
Texture is key in 2026. Think rattan, boucle, raw wood, linen and handmade ceramics.
LIVE – make it practical
A beautiful room that doesn’t function won’t last.
Ask yourself …
- Is there enough storage?
- Is the lighting right for evenings?
- Can this space handle real life, kids, pets, guests?
Open baskets, floating shelves and multi-purpose furniture help maintain calm without
sacrificing style.

DIY PROJECT
Textured statement wall art
This is affordable, impactful and completely on trend.
You’ll need:
- A blank canvas
- Ready-mix plaster or Polyfilla
- A putty knife or old bank card
- Neutral paint
How to:
Apply plaster unevenly across the canvas. Use the knife to create soft arches, waves or organic shapes. Let it dry completely. Paint in a soft neutral, think warm white, sand or stone.
The result? A high-end textured artwork that would cost thousands in-store.
Durban design trends to watch out for in 2026
With our indoor-outdoor lifestyle, expect
to see …
- Seamless patio-to-lounge styling
- Oversized planters
- Earthy greens and terracotta tones
- Statement lighting as sculptural art
April is your month to start dreaming. June is when inspiration explodes at the show. Between now and then, create spaces that feel like you. And most importantly, live
in them.
The East Coast Radio House + Garden Show returns to the Durban Exhibition Centre from June 27 to July 5, bringing fresh décor ideas, garden inspiration and plenty of homegrown creativity.
