May 06: Artist William Kentridge commemorates the millions of Africans who fought in and lost their lives in the First World War in The Head & the Load. Through music, dance, projections and shadow, the untold story of the role that Africa played in World War I will be revealed. Until May 6 at the Nelson Mandela Theatre. May 09: You are going to want to put on a fabulous little number for this one … The Dress Code – a stylish musical revue. Ever since Eve grabbed that fig leaf, humankind has been obsessed with what we wear, why we wear and how we wear it … join Stephanie Baartman, Lorri Strauss and Sharon Spiegel Wagner on the catwalk as they sing, talk and strut The Dress Code at Theatre on the Square. May 21: Send your imagination on a voyage with J.R.R Tolkien’s The Hobbit, a story of Bilbo Baggins, a simple home-loving hobbit, whose life takes an exciting turn when he is summoned to prepare for a trip by the wizard Gandalf. May 24: Five-time Grammy award winners, 63 years in the music industry and a group who has performed with world music icons, including Paul Simon, The late Michael Jackson, Steve Wonder, The Winnans and Dolly Parton. Have you guessed who will be gracing us with their presence? Yip. Ladysmith Black Mambazo is here for a national tour celebrating its journey in the music industry and thanking South Africans for the love and support they have shown for the past six decades. May 26: The Portuguese Festival 2023 is here again and is promising loads of fun for the whole família … helicopter rides, drifting, kids play area and the usual flea market stalls with popular Portuguese food, drinks and entertainment. Live music from international artist João Quintino, Joburg trio Mi Casa, DJ Miki plus dancers to liven up the crowd. May 26: A new art experience in Joburg … stroll through the gorgeous Shepstone Gardens and feast your eyes on a curated celebration of art from across Africa at the RMB Latitudes 2023. The three-day event will feature traditional art fair booths from leading galleries and unique exhibition spaces designed by curators and artists. May 28: ‘Oh Boy’, get ready to rock and roll over to The Teatro at Montecasino where the vastly popular hit Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story jukebox musical will be live on stage. Leading an all-South African cast is singer-songwriter Jethro Tait playing as Buddy Holly in this tribute musical following the journey of him (with his band The Crickets) and his rise to the top of the record charts, only to die tragically in a plane crash aged just 22. Also killed on that fateful flight were Ritchie Valens (La Bamba) and JP Richardson (The BIG Bopper). That date – February 3, 1959 – shook the world and became forever known as The Day the Music Died. It might be doom and gloom for them but you are sure to be on an unstoppable high.
