Noko Goes To School, a unique, African-themed children’s musical by National Children’s Theatre (NCT), teaches the value of cultural diversity and inclusivity in a fun adaptation that premieres at the NCT Outdoor Imagination Theatre.

Directed by exciting young director Dale Scheepers, the play is adapted from the book by South African children’s author Eleni Theodorou and carries a compassionate anti-bullying message that teaches respect for our many differences.

The play is adapted for the children’s stage by outgoing NCT CEO Moira Katz, from the Noko the Knight series of children’s books.

“We’ve managed to translate Eleni’s lovely story for the stage in a musically captivating, interactive way, showing kids that, while we are all different, we are also each special and deserving of love and respect,” says Scheepers. “I’m confident that these lessons will stay with them, thanks to our relatable characters, and the thrill-a-minute production.”

The story sees a group of young animals at bush school, coming to understand their differences in a loving, gentle way. It takes an empathetic, teaching approach to the clumsy things all of us might unconsciously say or do, but which can be hurtful to others.

“We have cast an amazing group of actors, who really bring these animals to life for the children, and the outdoor stage is the perfect setting,” says Scheepers. “Families and school groups can bring blankets and picnic baskets and join in the fun.”

Choreographer Khaya Ndlovu has given the show an active, dynamic feel that is also sure to draw young audiences into the story. Vibrant set and costume design by Sarah Roberts combines with the outdoor setting to bright visual effect.

National Children’s Theatre CEO Vicky Friedman says the new play is another fun example of how children’s theatre can be entertained, while teaching invaluable social skills.

“We’re so proud to be able to tell this entertaining children’s story, with such a beautiful message,” she says. “It teaches children mutual respect, as well as coping skills for particular situations, while they have fun.”

Director Scheepers cut his teeth as a young actor at NCT, appearing in Freckle-face Strawberry The Musical in 2017. He has worked across the entertainment industry as an actor, singer, musician, bandleader and musical director, and has now come full circle, returning to NCT to direct his first show.

Scheepers also wrote the music and songs for the show, which will have the audience on their feet and singing along in no time.

“We use music – the lyrics, the harmonies, the melodies – to make people really feel the emotions of the story,” he says. “That’s what gives you goosebumps!”

There will be goosebumps galore at Noko Goes To School! The musical promises great entertainment for children three years and older and runs from 16 July to 6 August. For more information, visit www.quicket.co.za or www.nctheatresa.org, email [email protected] or call 011 484 1584 or 071 429 2570.
