Blemishes beware! How to avoid breakouts in your mid-30’s

Let’s be honest… we’ve all had an embarrassing breakout, which usually comes out of nowhere and makes you want to hide away for days! But, acne breakouts are common (yes, even for adults in your 30’s) and are usually caused when hair follicles become clogged with dead skin cells, dirt and oil.

However, healthy, clear skin is possible to achieve and maintain when implementing a regular skin regime. Breakouts will soon become a thing of the past!

We spoke to Mariette and Carla, owners of SkinPhD Queenswood, and got their top tips to avoid breakouts.

  1. Properly wash your face. It’s important to remove excess oil, dirt, and sweat daily. With an array of great products, you can easily find products suitable to your skin type. Exfoliating is one of those things you know you should do, but probably don’t as you get older— kind of like flossing. By not getting rid of all that built-up dead skin you are simply adding to the problem, especially as you age.
  2. Know your skin type. The truth is that absolutely anyone can get pimples – children, adults, even your grandma! Knowing your skin type will help you choose the right skin care products. For example, if your skin is oily, choose noncomedogenic products that are formulated to not block pores. When you hit 30 your estrogen levels begin to drop and your cell turnover slows down, making your skin less tight and elastic, causing dryness and leading to some acne flare-ups.
  3. Consider your new environment. Frequent sun exposure dehydrates the skin, which over time causes it to produce more oil and block pores. A big no no! The older you get, the more skin-conscious you need to become.
  4. Increase your water intake. Staying hydrated is important as you your body may send a signal to your skin’s oil glands to produce more oil if it is feeling dehydrated which furthermore leads to breakouts. Dehydration also gives your skin a dull appearance and promotes inflammation and redness.
  5. Keep your diet in check. You are what you eat and food directly affects skin healthy and breakouts. Avoid greasy, oily foods! As you get older, your body requires more
  6. Reapply moisturiser regularly and don’t touch your face! Your hands touch multiple items during the day and are in constant contact with grime and bacteria, especially during Summer when temperatures rise. Each time you touch your face, some of those pore-clogging impurities may get transferred to your skin and cause pimples.

What product/treatment do you recommend for breakouts?
We suggest a ‘Skin Perfect Deep Cleanse’. This facial in particular helps treat impure skin. It includes steam, extractions and our new bio-technology Brightening mask to soothe the skin.

How often should one have this treatment?
At least once a month! Make it a part of your monthly skincare routine. Healthy skin requires commitment and dedication.
