Meet Zirkia Gregorowski, a woman who defied the odds and became a real-life superhero in the world of bodybuilding, despite doctors’ bleak predictions about her physical abilities as a child.

Zirkia Gregorowski’s journey of triumph and transformation began with a car accident at the tender age of five, an incident that would change the course of her life forever. She found herself with a shattered femur and a severely injured back. Doctors gave her parents a grim prognosis – she might never be able to participate in sports.

For many children, it would have been the final nail in the coffin of their athletic dreams. But Zirkia was far from ordinary. She’s just always had an unbreakable spirit, an unwavering ambition, and a tenacity that defied the odds. The doctor’s words were not the end for her, but rather the spark that ignited her passion for sports.

To say that her road to recovery was difficult is putting it mildly. Although Zirkia spent a gruelling year in traction, she emerged from this challenging time with a newfound determination … a warrior’s spirit that would carry her through the rest of her life.

By the end of her first year in school, she had cast aside her crutches and from that moment, never looked back and never stopped playing sports. In fact, she excelled in athletics during her entire school career.

“I developed a bulletproof mindset and continued with sport all my life. I believe this is when I developed a warrior’s brain,” Zirkia admits. It was exactly this mindset that would propel her to greatness in the world of sports, although it would take a unique and unexpected turn.

“I used to love endurance races. Not only was it something that challenged me physically, but it also brought a unique connection with nature – a reminder that we are a part of something much larger than ourselves. Running the Fish River Canyon and Augrabies Falls had to be my most challenging trials.”

Her journey into bodybuilding only started when she reached the age of 55. Always one to embrace challenges and seek personal growth, she was drawn to the idea of sculpting her body and pushing her physical limits.

For Zirkia though, the pursuit of bodybuilding is more than just a means of competition. It’s a way to challenge herself continually and to prove that age is no barrier to achieving her dreams. So, if age isn’t a factor, what does it take to become a bodybuilder?

But, few things come close to the way this now 61-year-old powerhouse feels on stage! Prepping for a bodybuilding competition involves rigorous training in the gym, but nutrition plays an equally critical role. Zirkia emphasises the importance of lean proteins such as fish, chicken and turkey breasts. Green vegetables like asparagus and broccoli are staples, and carbohydrates, especially in the initial weeks of preparation, provide the necessary energy. It’s a delicate balance, and the journey demands great dedication. It comes as no surprise that she currently holds the IBFF Ms Universe title. Remarkable really is an understatement!

Not too long ago, Zirkia added another achievement to her already impressive journey – she opened her own gym, GYM2GLOW. Inspired by her own transformation and driven by a desire to help others embark on their fitness journeys, Zirkia’s gym is proof of her commitment to motivating and supporting her clients. What sets her gym apart is her personal involvement and dedication to the success of each athlete who walks through her doors.

Apart from physical feats and gym management, Zirkia is also a professional valuer in the world of real estate. For more than two decades, she has excelled in this field, demonstrating that her talents and passions extend far beyond the world of sports. Her varied interests are proof that age is but a number and that the quality of life is determined by one’s mindset and lifestyle choices.

In fact, Zirkia firmly believes that age is a reflection of how one feels, not just a number on a birth certificate. The way you deal with ageing is determined by your perspective, as seen by her endless energy and enthusiasm of someone much younger.

When asked about her motivations in life, she emphasises her belief in being able.

“It’s a simple yet profound statement that encapsulates my approach to life – the belief in one’s ability to overcome challenges, set goals, and achieve them. It’s this unshakable faith in God, and in myself that has driven me all these years.”

The pursuit of beauty, according to Zirkia, is not just skin-deep. To her, beauty is synonymous with a good heart and soul. It’s a belief that transcends physical appearances and underscores the importance of inner qualities.

Despite her numerous accomplishments, Zirkia still nurtures dreams and aspirations. She envisions becoming a best-selling author. But, the dream of growth and self-improvement remains her constant companion.

Zirkia shares the motto that has guided her remarkable journey, ‘Great moments are born from great opportunities’. Why resistance bands?

  • Resistant band exercises as a regular fitness routine enhance muscular strength and stability, also reducing the risk of injuries.
  • It’s a great at-home option for building strength. But you must use them correctly.
  • They’re portable and easy to store. So, they’re perfect for home use or hotel workouts.
  • Resistance bands can strengthen your muscles the same or more effectively than more traditional weights.
  • Research also shows that using bands with weights improves neuromuscular performance and strength more than weight training alone.
  • Resistance bands are cost-effective and the best alternative to traditional fitness equipment and like free weights, exercise bands come in a range of resistance levels, from highly stretchable to heavy-duty strength.
  • Resistance bands are very effective for both upper-body and  lower-body exercises.

 

Your go-to resistance band guide

Who doesn’t like a bit of variation in life? Try switching to these exercises using resistance bands instead of mundane weights. In fact, Zirkia encourages the shift as resistance bands offer an edge over weight training. Who knew?

Although there are endless variations, Zirkia recommends the following 30-minute workout:

  • Front squat: 15 reps x 3 sets
  • Bent over row: 15 reps x 3 sets
  • Glute bridge: 15 reps x 3 sets
  • Push-ups: 15 reps x 3 sets
  • Reverse crunch: 20 reps x 4 sets
  • Standing bicep curls: 15 reps x 3 sets

 

Zirkia’s fave protein bread recipe

You’ll need: 2 large eggs; 1 banana; 1 Tbsp cream cheese (room temperature); 3 heaped Tbsp whey protein isolate (unflavoured) powder; ½ tsp baking powder; 1 pinch salt; 1½ tbsp peanut butter; 1 tsp chia seeds.

To make: Mix all ingredients. Grease a flat-bottomed small bowl with butter. Microwave on medium-high (approximately 700 watts) for 3 minutes.

Check if the bread is done in the middle – if not, microwave for another 15-30 seconds.

Let cool for a minute and remove from the bowl. Enjoy!
