Sholain Perumal, CEO of The Gold Bar, and mum of a gorgeous 3-month-old baby, Shreyan, talks about navigating the challenges of being both a mother and CEO of multiple businesses.

Sholain always thought that to build an empire and shatter glass ceilings, she would have to sacrifice having a family. But she has now realised that in today’s world, women can break barriers and redefine success on their own terms. “One of the most powerful ways we can do this is by embracing the roles of both CEO and mother. With the right mindset, strategies, and support, it’s possible to excel at both – and do it with confidence,” she says.

Being a mother and a CEO often means juggling the demands of a high-profile career while also meeting the needs of a family. It involves sleepless nights and busy days. For Sholain, the challenges are real, but the rewards are endless. “I am learning to multitask on a different level, between trying to be the best mum I can be and running my businesses,” she shares.

Sholain’s businesses include The Gold Bar, a gold recycling company, with six stores around the country, including a branch at Ballito Junction; and Sensational Hair, Nails & Beauty with one branch on Chartwell Drive in Umhlanga and one in Cornubia Mall.

“Being a CEO and a mother can feel overwhelming, but when done with passion and purpose, it can be incredibly fulfilling,” she says. “In the end, it’s about embracing the challenges, trusting in your abilities, and knowing that you can thrive in both your professional and personal life. Every day is a new opportunity to grow, learn, and show up for both your company and your family. By doing so, you set an example for the next generation that women can truly have it all – and excel at it.”
