MWM: Dr Philip Fischer

“Do what you love, find someone you love, be humble and don’t take yourself or live too seriously.” – Dr Philip Fischer

Dr Philip Fischer is an Orthopaedic Surgeon at Fischer Human Orthopaedic Surgical Practice. He says he only discovered his love for medicine after qualifying as a Pharmacist. “I then discovered the awesome amount of tools that are being used in Orthopaedic Surgery and I was hooked on becoming an Orthopaedic Surgeon.”

Dr Fishcher performs his surgeries at Cure Day Hospitals Bloemfontein. By choosing Cure Day Hospitals for their minor surgical needs, patients can rest assured that they are in the hands of a highly skilled surgeon backed by a supportive and knowledgeable medical team.

He is motivated by three things in life: God, family and friends. When it comes to building a business he believes that hunger, integrity and humility are the three most important characteristics one should have.

His biggest professional achievement is becoming an Orthopaedic Surgeon. “I come from a very small town and through grace and hard work I have the opportunity to touch people’s lives through medicine,” he says.

He adds that in his personal life being a husband and father is something he is proud of. “The support of my family and friends make all worthwhile. No achievement must be measured by money or fame but by the amount of friends and memories we accumulate.”

According to Dr Philip, he is one of two partners at Fischer Human Orthopaedic Surgical practice. “Dr Bukkie Human and I went into private practice in 2014 and started the company in 2016. We have been friends for 24 years. We do the full range of Orthopaedic Surgery and strive to have a one-stop Orthopaedic Service for our patients,” he says.

Dr Philip and Dr Bukkie believe that any business that is built on a foundation of service, empathy and principle will be successful no matter the economic climate. “We also belief in a fair price with no co-payments. Adaptability is crucial in today’s economy. Seeing the bigger picture without sweating the small stuff is also essential,” says Dr Philip.

He adds that their business success is mostly based on their ability to listen to their patients, going the extra mile and giving a hundred percent no matter the outcome.

“Being a doctor for 20 years now, I am privileged to be able to look back and reassess life choices. Firstly enjoying what you do is so important. If you enjoy what you do you will never work one day in your life. Stop taking life so seriously, none of us is going to leave it alive. All of us will die, but only some of us will live,” he says.

He adds that one should always try to find joy in small things, then big things will happen spontaneously. “Make God the number one priority, family second and friends third. Work will sort itself out.”

Dr Philip spends his downtime with friends and family. “I love guns, watches and anything with wheels and an engine. Hunting plays a big part in my life and I am an avid collector of mechanical watches. Off-roading with the 4×4 and riding motorcycles really relaxes me. Boating and fishing complete the circle in the summer months.”
