“I love working with clients, seeing the smiles when they get their car back, looking brand new. That moment of satisfaction means everything to me. It’s not just about fixing cars – it’s about helping others, being there when they need you, and building trust. That’s what keeps me going every day.” This, according to the owner of TC Panelbeaters, Tommy Rodgers.
Rodgers started his journey as a panel beater at a very young age working as an apprentice at Smith Panelbeaters. “Back then, I didn’t know much, but I had the drive to learn and the passion to work with cars. After earning my qualification, the idea of starting my own shop began to take shape.”
He credits his wife for their success, explaining that it was her belief in him during the early days and her unwavering support that enabled him to open the shop – which eventually evolved into what we now know as TC Panelbeaters. “My wife and I took a leap of faith and opened up our own place in 1993. It was small – just the two of us and a whole lot of hope. Over time, through hard work and word of mouth, we grew into what TC is today.”
For him, it’s the people that keep him going, their support and interactions are a constant source of inspiration. What really makes it all worth it, he says, is seeing the happiness on a client’s face when a job is done. He believes strong, lasting relationships with clients aren’t just nice to have – they’re essential to growing a successful business. “People talk – your name is your reputation, so do the job right the first time. Bloem is small, trust and relationships go a long way,” Rodgers said.
Years later, Rodgers is still at it. He is constantly working to improve his business. According to him, he ensures that he arrives early at his shop and makes sure that everything runs smoothly throughout the day. “I’m already at work by 06:00 every morning. Early start, check on the team, talk to clients, solve problems, make sure everything runs smoothly. Repeat,” Rodgers mentioned.
He advised those who wish to follow in his footsteps to be patient as it takes time, but at the end it will be worthwhile.
