Louise Nel leads with compassion, dignity and care, supporting families through some of life’s most difficult moments with empathy and grace.
As a mother, grandmother and the owner of Louise Nel Funeral Parlour, she sees her profession not simply as a business, but as a calling.
“My work is my passion,” Louise says. “My love for people brings me the greatest joy, second only to my family.”
Louise established her funeral parlour after recognising how overwhelming the loss of a loved one can be. Beyond the emotional pain, she saw families struggling to navigate the practical arrangements that follow.
“I saw the need for care and compassion during life’s most difficult moments,” she explains. “I felt called to be that calm, respectful guide when everything feels overwhelming.”
That philosophy remains at the heart of her business today. Every family is welcomed with empathy, professionalism and personalised care, ensuring each farewell honours not only a life lived, but also the legacy, culture and memories that remain.
She believes women bring a unique strength to the profession through compassion, attention to detail and the ability to create comfort during times of grief. “It’s not just about funerals,” she says. “It’s about honouring life, legacy and culture.”
Despite the demands of being available to families when they need her most, Louise intentionally creates space for what keeps her grounded. Time spent with her grandchildren, tending to her garden and moments of quiet reflection help her recharge. She also treasures a small pendant, gifted by her mother, which serves as a daily reminder of her roots and the importance of leading with empathy.
Being named a Best of Bloemfontein – Bloemfontein Courant Readers’ Choice Awards 2025 winner, remains one of her proudest achievements. “To know that love and human dignity can come together like that is priceless,” she says.
