From turning personal adversity into purpose to building a thriving law firm, Tumelo Modise is empowering clients, mentoring future legal professionals and creating opportunities for women in the legal sector.
For many people, choosing a career in law is inspired by a passion for justice. For Tumelo Modise, however, that passion was deeply personal.
Growing up, she witnessed an injustice that affected her father, an experience that shaped her understanding of fairness and ultimately inspired her to pursue a legal career. What began as a desire to make a difference has evolved into a lifelong commitment to helping people navigate some of life’s most difficult moments.
“I’ve always enjoyed problem-solving, fairness and helping others through difficult situations. Over time, I realised law combines these strengths, and I saw it not just as a career, but as a calling.”
Today, Modise is the founder and director of Tumelo Attorneys, a 100% black-woman-owned law firm based in Bloemfontein. She has also established Faith Law Consultancy, a sister company dedicated to legal coaching, mentorship, consulting and empowering women in the legal profession.
As the founder of her own practice, Tumelo says she wanted to build a firm known not only for legal expertise but also for genuine client care and practical solutions. “Tumelo Attorneys focuses on problem-solving and accessible, client-centred legal services.
“Faith Law Consultancy expanded this into training, consulting, advisory work and outreach programmes, all aimed at empowering clients and members of the community through practical solutions.”
Like many entrepreneurs, Modise faced numerous obstacles when starting her practice. Among the biggest challenges were limited mentorship opportunities, financial pressure, establishing credibility in a competitive industry and balancing business growth with professional development.
“Unlike most businesses, a law firm operates within a regulated professional environment. You have to balance compliance with providing legal services while also managing the business operations,” she says.
Rather than allowing these challenges to discourage her, she relied on her entrepreneurial mindset, corporate experience and years in the legal profession. “Over time, trust was built, referrals from satisfied clients kept coming and the practice grew.”
Although corporate law can be demanding, Tumelo says one of the most rewarding aspects of her career is supporting fellow entrepreneurs. By helping businesses manage legal risks and establish solid legal foundations, she believes she is contributing to economic growth and stronger communities. “Being part of the growth journey of entrepreneurs is incredibly rewarding.”
One of her proudest achievements has been building her law firm from the ground up. “Every client relationship matters, and providing solutions while maintaining high standards and growing the practice remains my greatest accomplishment.”
Giving back to the community remains central to Tumelo’s work. Through Faith Law Consultancy, she mentors young professionals and women entering the legal sector, believing that success is most meaningful when it creates opportunities for others. “Success is meaningful when others are uplifted,” she says. “Mentorship allows me to share my experience, guide young professionals and bridge the gap between studying law and practising it.”
As the legal profession continues to evolve, Tumelo believes aspiring lawyers need to embrace change while remaining grounded in strong values. “Young lawyers need to be adaptable, emotionally intelligent, strong communicators and committed to continuous learning. Technology is changing the field, so those who embrace innovation while maintaining integrity, will thrive.”
Balancing a demanding legal career with her personal life remains an ongoing process. “I prioritise growth, family and wellbeing, and my faith helps keep me grounded and focused on purpose.”
She says the legal profession has taught her valuable lessons that extend far beyond the courtroom. “It has taught me integrity, accountability and humility. I’ve also learned that mistakes are part of growth, and what matters is committing to correcting them and continuously improving.”
For young women hoping to follow a similar path, she offers simple but powerful advice. “Believe in yourself, invest in your education, seek mentorship and take calculated risks. Success requires patience and resilience. Your challenges should never discourage you, and your background should never limit your vision.”
Her journey is a testament to the power of purpose-driven leadership. Through her legal practice, mentorship and community outreach, Tumelo continues to prove true success is not only measured by professional achievements, but by the lives positively impacted along the way.
