Joining the Vrystaat Arts Festival allowed me to merge my artistic vision with strategic leadership – and I’ve never looked back.
Proud Kovsie and now Director of the Vrystaat Kunstefees / Arts Festival / Tsa-Botjhaba, Michael Garbett is a passionate advocate for the transformative power of the creative and cultural industries.
“It has the power to unite communities, challenge perspectives, and spark dialogue – especially the tough, red-faced conversations we often avoid. Watching new talent emerge and established artists thrive continues to drive my commitment.”
With a background in Drama and Theatre Arts, Michael began his career as a freelance theatre designer. His path evolved organically into arts administration, curation, and festival management when he joined the Vrystaat Arts Festival team as a part-time administrative assistant in 2015. At the heart of his work is a deep commitment to community.
“The Festival is rooted in collaboration and inclusivity. We aim to reflect, celebrate, and uplift the rich diversity and cultural heritage of Bloemfontein and beyond.”
Michael draws inspiration from trailblazers in South African arts, including Gerben Kamper and Saartjie Botha, as well as organisations dedicated to nurturing an Afrikaans-inclusive cultural landscape. “My mentors and peers have profoundly influenced my approach and continue to inspire my journey.”
Professionally, success for Michael means fostering growth and sustainability within the Vrystaat Arts Festival creating meaningful cultural experiences with integrity while supporting artists. “Personally, it’s about practising balance and creativity, nurturing meaningful connections, and inspiring the next generation. Your inner circle is far more valuable than anything, and we must cherish those relationships.”
To him, relationships are the heartbeat of Bloemfontein. “This city thrives on authenticity, collaboration, and mutual respect. You’re working with people who carry stories – listen to them.”
When it comes to balancing work and life, Michael is candid about the challenges. “Setting clear boundaries is essential. Prioritising family, friends, and well-being helps me maintain balance. Arts administration can be demanding, so I consciously carve out time to recharge and nurture both creative and personal relationships. It’s easier said than done but practice makes perfect – eventually.”
As a child, he dreamed of becoming a performer immersed in storytelling and imagination.
Today, as the Festival’s Director, he helps others bring their stories to life, fulfilling that childhood passion in a different, but equally rewarding way.
Outside the spotlight, Michael finds joy in the kitchen. Cooking is his creative escape, a space where experimenting with flavours provides both relaxation and inspiration.
To young men stepping into the creative industry, his advice is heartfelt: “Stay curious. Embrace challenges. Learn from everyone you meet. Success in the arts is built on resilience, collaboration, and genuine relationships. Be grateful for every opportunity big or small and always move with integrity.”
