The perfect Spring drink to pair with your braai …
Make your own Sangria
A generously sized jug of Sangria never goes amiss when you’re entertaining outdoors. Perfect for a Spring or Summer party … it makes an impressive cocktail option.
To make, chop up a selection of fruit – apples, pears and oranges – and a cup of red berries like cherries, strawberries and raspberries. Put into a bowl, sprinkle with three teaspoons brown sugar or castor sugar, the juice of half a lemon and a teaspoon of cinnamon, stir to coat, cover and leave in the fridge for around an hour.
Tip the fruit into your jug, along with one cinnamon stick (optional). Add one bottle good South Africa Pinot Noir (or a Spanish red if you’re going for authenticity), a third to half a cup of brandy or orange liqueur like Cointreau or Grand Marnier and half a cup orange juice. Chill well. Serve over ice.
One for the kids ... Make the Under 18s their own Summer cocktail. Simply replace the wine with red grape juice or sparkling Grapetiser, leave out the brandy and liqueur and serve over ice. They’ll love it!
The easy version … and just as delish. Penasol Sangria is a generous one litre bottle, and all you need to do is open, pour into an ice-filled jug and add some chopped fruit of your choice. R79.99 from Woolworths.
