Your 2026 cheat sheet to maximising public holiday breaks

Get the most out of your holidays this year with these clever leave hacks that make public holidays work for you.

Public holidays are more than just a day off – they’re your secret weapon for overseas breaks, local mini-getaways, or some well-deserved staycation chill time. Start planning now and use a few strategic leave days to turn ordinary weekends into extended escapes:
  • April/May: The golden month for extended holidays. With Freedom Day and Workers’ Day close together, taking just 3 days leave can get you a 9-day break from 25 April – 3 May. Head to Thailand, Bali, Zanzibar or Mauritius for sunshine and sea – all visa-free for South Africans.
  • September: Springtime means adventure! Take two days leave and get a 5-day long weekend from 24-28 September. Celebrate Heritage Month your way – braai near the beach in Durban, sip craft gin in the Cape, or explore Pilanesberg. Want to head further? It’s also a great month for Greece, Dubai, or Thailand before the year-end rush … with a few extra leave days of course.
  • December: Summer, sunshine, and festive energy, December is the ultimate time to travel. Take 4 days leave and get a 9-day holiday from 19-27 December.  Book early for the best rates and availability, whether you’re staying local or heading to a tropical island. December is all about relaxing, recharging, and wrapping up the year in holiday mode.
