On the grapevine… new wines to try this Autumn

Rosé as a wine style is currently one of the most popular … offering a large and delightful range in colour, cultivar, acidity and sugar levels. In fact, it’s easy to imagine feeling like a kid in a candy store when shopping in the Rosé section – slightly overwhelmed, but childishly excited, and keen to try them all. The De Krans Pinotage Rosé 2020 is delicate, light pink, refreshing and crisp … all red fruit flavours like strawberries and candyfloss, no wonder it’s been quietly racking up awards. Pinotage Rosé is currently the fastest growing wine in the De Krans Wine portfolio and for good reason – not only does it offer the perfect balance of fruit, acidity and freshness, (everything you are looking for in a delicious Rosé), but it’s really affordable, too … around R74 per bottle. Is there ever a season when bubbles are not appropriate? We think not. So this Autumn, we’re raising a glass to the new Groote Post Brut Méthode Cap Classique. A blend of  traditional Champagne varietals, 60 per cent Chardonnay and 40 per cent Pinot Noir, it’s elegant, refreshing, and is lovely on its own or with a spoil-yourself treat like oysters. ‘With the 2020 vintage I am finally able to share my first Steenberg Sauvignon Blanc sporting a brand new elegant look, and I could not be happier. Our terroir inspires me every day to create the best wine possible to share with wine lovers. I hope everyone enjoys it as much as I do,’ says cellarmaster Elunda Basson. The vibrant Steenberg Sauvignon Blanc 2020, and the more nuanced Steenberg Rattlesnake Sauvignon Blanc 2019, are the first of this estate’s wines to show off their new sophisticated labels that give prominence to the wine farm’s iconic swan. The zesty Sauvignon Blanc has a seductive bouquet of fresh Cape gooseberries, nettles, capsicum and white blossom, and is all grapefruit zest and elderflower while maintaining a distinctive mineral core. On the other side of the spectrum is the beautifully textured, lightly wooded Rattlesnake Sauvignon Blanc … rich and alluring, elegant and comforting … an ideal choice for enjoying on cooler days. Elderflower –  the hallmark of top-tier Constantia white wines – fresh asparagus and Cape gooseberry marry on the nose and palate enlivened by hints of capsicum, nasturtium and lime. R145 and R170 respectively, from steenbergfarm.com
